Shot putter Meveeqhen making great strides at only 16

KUALA LUMPUR: Shot putter R. Meveeqhen may be only 16 but he is already making great strides in the sport.

The Form Four student of St Michael School in Ipoh, won the gold in the boys’ Under-18 category in the National Schools (MSSM) athletics meet in Kuantan last month with a throw of 15.14m.

The burly Meveeqhen, who is 193cm (6ft 3in) tall and weighs 98kg, marked his international debut by hurling the putt 15.57m for the bronze medal in the South-East Asia (SEA) Youth athletics championships in Ho Chi Minh City last week.

That has earned Meveeqhen, who trains under former international Arjan Singh Kalhsa in Ipoh, selection for the fifth edition of the Asean Schools Games in Hanoi from June 22-30.

And Meveeqhen was quick to thank Arjan for his rapid progress.

“If not for him (Arjan), I don’t think I would have been able to make such a vast improvement,” said Meveeqhen, who only started training under Arjan in January.

Meveeqhen, who only took up shot putt two years ago, felt that he could have won the gold in Ho Chi Minh City if he had not faulted his sixth and last throw, which surpassed the 16m mark.

“I intend to improve on my personal best and surpass the 16m mark in the Asean Schools Games,” said Meveeqhen, who is training in Bukit Jalil.

He was supposed to be trained by national throws coach Mohd Nazar Abdul Rahim in Bukit Jalil but the coach has been hospitalised since last week with heart problem and pneumonia.

“I’m now training under Faisol Harun, who is the coach for the disabled athletes. I wish I was back in Ipoh training under Arjan ... he could help me prepare better for Hanoi,” said Meveeqhen, the second of three siblings and whose ambition is to be a petrochemical engineer.

Meveeqhen is among 35 athletes – 19 boys and 16 girls – named for the Asean Schools Games in athletics.

Direct flight now to Naypyitaw for Malaysian SEA Games squad

Source: Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian athletes participating in the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar would be flying direct to Naypyitaw, the main venue for the Games, on special flights arranged by Myanmar.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the host country would arrange special flights from Kuala Lumpur to Naypyitaw, which is the administrative capital of Myanmar, using Myanmar Airlines.

“The assurance was given by the SEA Games organising committee through a letter sent to us recently,” he told reporters after attending the launch of Suunto Ambit 2 and 2s watches by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Razali Ibrahim.

With the new development, athletes need not stay overnight in Yangon before continuing their journey to Naypyitaw, using domestic flights, he said.

As for fears of safety of athletes during the SEA Games due to ethnic clashes, Kok Chi said the organising committee had assured that they would not be an issue as the security of the athletes would be given due consideration.

“In fact, a number of sports associations and local media members who had visited Myanmar had brought back positive feedback,” he said.

Reports in Myanmar had emerged that the organisers of the Myanmar SEA Games were considering postponing the Games due to the ethnic clashes that have resulted in a number of deaths.

Reid tapped to coach national football team in SEA Games

Source: Spin.ph

GLOBAL coach Brian Reid has been tapped to handle the Philippine 23-under men’s football team that will represent the country in the Southeast Asian Games in December.

The 42-year-old Scottish mentor, who is trying to lead Global to a second successive title in the United Football League, is set to become the next foreign head coach of the youth team after German Michael Weiss helmed the side in the last SEA Games.

Philippine Football Federation general secretary Ed Gastanes confirmed the news to Spin.ph on Monday, saying he submitted the list of the coaching staff along with the national 23-under team pool members to the Philippine Sports Commission last week.

Reid will be assisted by Ilonggo coach Dan Padernal and Pachanga-Diliman mentor Noel Marcaida, who is set to be the goalkeeping coach.

“At least we can change it, but in the meantime, they’re the ones recommended by the national teams committee and approved by (PFF),” said the lawyer, the ex-officio member of the national team committee headed by Azkals manager Dan Palami.

The youth team is set to have a friendly series against Singapore, starting with an away game in the opponent’s turf on Thursday. The home match is tentatively slated on July 20.

SEA Games to mark milestone for M'sia

Source: The Star

The 27th edition of the SEA Games in Nayphidaw, Myanmar, in December will mark a milestone for Malaysia in the series.

The third gold medal that Malaysia win at the Games will be the country’s 1,000th since the series began as SEAP Games in 1959.

Malaysia have amassed 997 gold medals – just three short of the magical 1,000 mark.

Naturally, the big question that’s foremost on the minds of Malaysians is who will be the 1,000th gold medallist for the country.

It’s hard to say which sport will win the 1,000th gold medal as the Games’ schedule is not ready yet.

Usually, swimming and shooting are held in the opening days of the Games and Malaysia certainly stand a good chance of winning in these two events.

At the last Games, co-hosted by Palembang and Jakarta, Malaysia returned home with 59 gold medals.

It would have been 60 but the 4x400m athletics relay team tested positive for doping and their gold medal was taken away.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general Sieh Kok Chi admitted that it would be a great milestone for Malaysia to pass the 1,000-gold mark.

“Yes, it will be special and I am sure that we will remember Myanmar for it,” he said.

“I just hope that the sport that delivers the 1,000th gold medal is an Olympic sport. That would make it more glamorous.

“Nevertheless, it’ll be a milestone to be cherished.”

Only two nations have hauled in more than 1,000 gold medals in the series – and they are both fast closing in on the 2,000-gold mark!

Thailand lead the way with 1,887 gold medals – just 113 short of the 2,000 mark, which they should achieve in Myanmar.

A total of 460 gold medals is at stake in Myanmar with 33 sports being contested.

Indonesia are ranked second in the gold medal haul with a total of 1,602.

Malaysia are third and the Philippines fourth with 835 medals.

The Games started in 1959 as the South-East Asian Peninsula Games (SEAP Games) with seven teams – Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Burma (Myanmar), Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore.

In 1977, it was renamed the South-East Asia Games (SEA Games) with the inclusion of Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei.

Timor Leste joined the ranks in 2003 and have only one gold medal to their name – courtesy of Julianto Danabere in kempo at the 2011 Games in Indonesia.

For the record, Myanmar will be hosting the SEA Games for only the third time. But the first two – in 1961 and 1969 – were still known as SEAP Games and the country was then called Burma.

Selected Myanmar boxers in training for SEA Games

Myanmar's boxing team will travel to China for one month in preparation for 27th South East Asian Games to be held in December this year in the capital Nay Pyi Taw, according to Myanmar's Boxing Federation.

Five male and six female boxers have been selected for a month training in China between end of June and July. Another team travelled to Kazakhstan in May for an 8-week intensive training.

Boxing is a traditional sport in Myanmar and the country has long participated in the international sporty. Myanmar won a gold medal in the 1983 SEA Games and it aims to achieve more medals in the upcoming 27th  SEA Games to be hosted in Nay Pyi Taw, as well as Yangon, Mandalay and Ngwe Saung Beach from December 11 to 22 this year.

The Myanmar Boxing Federation has selected 18 male and 15 female boxers to represent the country in friendly matches in August in the capital.

The SEA Games, held every two years since 1959, is the largest sports event in Southeast Asia and includes 32 disciplines. Myanmar has hosted the games two times: in 1961 and 1969. Myanmar won 104 medals in the 1961 SEA Games and 149 medals in 1969.

Tourism minister calls for hotel price regulation ahead of SEA games

Source: Democratic Voice of Burma

Burma’s tourism minister has called for hotel prices to be regulated ahead of the 2013 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December or risk derailing the country’s nascent tourism industry.

Hotel and Tourism Minister Htay Aung recently warned that the current trend of rising hotel prices in Burma’s commercial capital could put people off from attending the games as well as deter future tourists.

“Raising [accommodation] prices during the SEA Games could prevent tourists from visiting in the future,” said the minister.

“There are many new hotels that will open in Rangoon by the end of this year and the charges need to be regulated.”

According to one tourism operator, if the issue went unaddressed potential visitors might reconsider attending the games.

“Hotel operators think there will be a lot of tourists visiting, but don’t realise they actually won’t if the prices are this high,” said Aye Kyaw, owner of Rubyland Tourism Services.

“This will destroy the tourism sector and the hotel operators are going to be the ones responsible for that.”

According to a report published in the English edition of The New Light of Myanmar on 7 June, the government is in the process of cooperating with hotels and tour operators to address the problem.

“Regarding the recent high room prices, the ministry is making coordination [sic] between the tourism companies and the hotels and educating the hoteliers to balance prices and services and to offer full services to the foreign guests,” read the report.

During the World Economic Forum in Naypyidaw last week, the Burmese and Norwegian governments along with the Asian Development Bank announced the implementation of a half billion-dollar tourism master plan.

The new money aims to address the country’s woefully undeveloped infrastructure that languished after decades of international isolation and tourism boycotts supported by human rights groups.

More than 30 development projects will be completed in accordance with the master plan, including the building of new roads and expanding arrival terminals at the country’s airports.

As the Burma’s continues to open up during its nascent reform period, the number of tourists visiting the former pariah has soared; however, due to the lack hotels in the country prices have gone through the roof.

Although officials have boasted that more than a million tourists visited Burma in 2012, only 559,610 travellers arrived in Rangoon, while more than 400,000 people entered the country for day trips at Thai border crossings.

In May, the Minister Aung Htay said the government was hoping to have three million tourists visit the country by 2015.

However, experts have questioned whether the massive push to increase the number of visitors was sustainable in the impoverished country.

“I think it’s very difficult to have responsible tourism when the aim is to have three million tourists by 2015,” said Andrea Valentin, founder of Tourism Transparency.

“We have to develop that number sustainably. I don’t know if that number can be reached in a sustainable way.”

According to statistics compiled by the Burmese government in 2012, there are more than 28,000 rooms available at the 787 hotels operating across the country.

Hup Wei meets the mark for SEA Games in Myanmar

Source: The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Hup Wei is the fourth men’s high jumper to have qualified for the Myanmar SEA Games in December.

The 25-year-old Selangor athlete cleared 2.15m in the Regensburg Open in Germany to bag the silver medal.

The qualifying mark for the SEA Games is 2.12m, which is the silver medal mark of the 2011 Indonesia Games.

However, his effortwas way off his national record of 2.27m, which he did in 2008 in China to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

The other three high jumpers who have qualified for the biennial SEA Games are S. Navin Raj, Nauraj Singh and A. Kavee Alagan.

Navin from Johor cleared 2.15m to bag the gold in the Asean University Games in Laos last December while Nauraj, also from Johor, won the gold medal with a 2.15m jump in the first Malaysian Grand Prix in Bukit Jalil in April.

The Negri Sembilan-born Kavee cleared 2.19m en route to winning the gold medal in the Taiwan Open last month.

However, each country is allowed to send two athletes for one event in the SEA Games.

Hup Wei, who is in Germany for five weeks of training-cum-competition, said that although he has qualified for the SEA Games he has to further improve his jump.

“I am a three-time SEA Games gold medallist and I need to clear 2.20m in competitions to confirm my place in the SEA Games,” said Hup Wei, who was gold medallist in Korat (2007), Laos (2009) and Palembang (2011).

More than 230 shortlisted for SEA Games

Source: The Brunei Times

More than 230 athletes have been shortlisted to represent Brunei at this year's Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports' national selection and evaluation committee met yesterday to discuss the country's preparation for the Dec 11-22 Games in Myanmar, with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, revealing that the selected athletes were made up from 25 different sports.

Also present at the meeting at the Conference Room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas was His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, the president of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC).

"I hope this meeting will help the committee decide whether the candidates are worthy to represent the country at the SEA Games," said YB Pehin Dato Hj Hazair.

"We don't want to go to Myanmar just for exposure, we want to win medals... That is the challenge.

"There have already been a few meetings with the sport associations and we will be providing them (the athletes) the necessary coaching, overseas training and allowances (for the SEA Games)," added the minister.

The committee, which receives input from various sources, is tasked with choosing which athletes should represent Brunei in contingents the country sends to regional and international tournaments.

The athletes' selection is based on five criteria; past and current achievements, good discipline, good attendance in training, being able to show improvement during training and being able to pass fitness tests.

The SEA Games, where 33 sports are set to be contested, is one of the four multi-sport events the country will be competing in this year.

The others are the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea from June 29 to July 6 and the 2nd Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China from August 16-24.

The 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games at Pekanbaru-Riau, Indonesia, which was scheduled for June 6-17, was postponed to a further date due to "technical reasons".

Previous reports in The Brunei Times have stated that sub-contractors hired to build the main stadium stopped operations in protest at not being paid in full.

TWO indoor volleyball players from Abellana National School (ANS) were picked to complete the RP youth team to compete in the 5th Asean Schools Games (ASG) on June 22-30 at Hanoi, Vietnam.

TWO Cebuanos were picked for the PH youth volleyball team in the 5th Asean School Games on June 22 and 30.

Ulyses Lopez, a fourth year student of Abellana National School (ANS) and ANS alumn Kevin Petancio, now a first year college student of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), will join the team in the annual competition.

ANS head coach Karem Datig said that the two were discovered by Nestor Bello, the volleyball tournament manager during the recent Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City.

The two helped Cviraa finished third in the tournament, topped by Calabarzon. The players from the gold-medal winning team will form the core of the squad.

Datig said Bello was impressed with 17-year-old Lopez, who is a 6’1” middle blocker and Petancio,17, who was named the best setter in the tournament.

“I was overwhelmed upon learning that two of my players were chosen to complete the national youth team. This will be their first international exposure and as a coach, I am proud and I consider this as one of my highest achievements,” said Datig.

Cadiz City pride duo Aprille Diane Bibiano and Dhessa Mae Arino

Cadiz City badminton duo Aprille Diane Bibiano and Dhessa Mae Arino will again don the country’s colors when they see action in the upcoming 5th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) set June 222-30 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Bibiano and Arino, both freshmen at the University of St. La Salle, were also part of the four badminton players from Cadiz City, Negros Occidental who saw action last year during the 4th ASG in Indonesia.

These young shuttlers made remarkable silver medal finish in secondary girls’ doubles during the recent 2013 Palarong Pambansa held in Dumaguete City.

The duo had been playing together for years, thus, making them a formidable tandem in their age group.

Meanwhile, for USLS badminton team head coach  Jay Binas said his women’s team is stronger this year.

“The addition of Bibiano and Arino as well as another freshmen and former Palarong Pambansa player Aizyl Joy Anuales in his team will further strengthen our campaign in defending the NOPSSCEA and WVPRISSAA titles in women’s division,” he said.

At present, the USLS women’s shuttlers are anchored by Ballenas siblings Precious Mae and Precious Minie, and Izaa Temporosa. Precious Mae is now in her senior year while Temporosa and Precious Minie are in third and second years, respectively.

Binas also stressed they are also looking at getting reaching the finals this year in the UniGames and National PRISAA were they both settled second runner-up.  “We also hope to win the title if God-willing,” he added.

“Last year was very close. We did our best but unluckily we didn’t get it. But it’s ok with us as it’s always part of the game. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose,” Binas stressed.

“This year we really doubled our effort. We started our varsity camp early last summer because we believed it will be a very close and tough fight this season,” he added.

Phl to host golf in Asean School Games

Source: PhilStar (Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines will stage the golf competition on a satellite basis at the 5th Asean School Games to be hosted by Vietnam in June and the Department of Education intends to tap a major sponsor to mobilize resources for the staging of the high school tournament to involve a maximum of seven countries.

The Asean School Games is an annual event supervised by the Asean Schools Sports Council and in 2009, was transformed from a single-sport, satellite affair into an Olympic-like conclave. The countries that participate in the Games are Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. In four stagings so far, the Philippines has claimed only a single gold medal out of 482 at stake with the basketball team of San Beda Taytay reaping the honor in Singapore in 2011. The San Beda team was composed of Francis Abarcar, Van Abatayo, Limuel Patenio, Antonio Bonsubre, Jr., Ranbill Tongco, Boden Miranda, Louis Macapayag, Mikhail Tee, Arvin Tolentino, Francis Munsayac, Daryl Nazareno and Gideon Babilonia.

The Philippines has never hosted the Asean School Games but will take its turn next year. The hosts have been Thailand in 2009, Malaysia in 2010, Singapore in 2011 and Indonesia last year. Hanoi will host this year but begged off from staging golf because of lack of facilities. There are five compulsory sports in the Games calendar – athletics, swimming, badminton, golf and pencak silat. Other sports to be played in Vietnam are basketball, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, gymnastics and sepak takraw. The sports strictly for boys are sepak takraw and pencak silat while the other sports will be for boys and girls.

DepEd Undersecretary Rizalino Rivera attended an organization meeting of the Games in Singapore last November and was asked by Vietnam if the Philippines could stage golf in this year’s competition on a satellite basis. Rivera phoned DepEd Secretary Br. Armin Luistro, FSC, long distance for clearance during the meeting and received approval to accept the invitation. ICTSI is reportedly being eyed as a major sponsor for the golf tournament with participation by the country’s junior parbusters. An initial meeting was recently held with Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines president Luigi Tabuena and DepEd officials to discuss plans for the satellite event.

The Philippines is at the bottom of the standings after four Asean School Games with a total of only 11 medals – one gold, four silvers and six bronzes. Brunei is next to last with 17 medals, eight silvers and nine bronzes. Thailand is at the top of the ladder with 171 gold of 438 total medals. Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam follow in the standings in that order.

“It’s a very challenging competition,” said Cesar Abalon, head of DepEd’s Schools Sports Events and Activities unit. “Our athletes are at a disadvantage because we send high school students who are 16 years old on the average. High school students of other countries are older and they’re often national junior athletes. Most of the athletes we send are medalists of the Palarong Pambansa.”

In 2010, Ever Bilena Cosmetics, Inc. sponsored the girls basketball team that represented the country at the Games in Malaysia. This year, the company owned by former PBL chairman Dioceldo Sy is offering to sponsor the girls basketball team to Vietnam. Sy, godfather of the Lady Bulldogs senior women’s basketball team, is also offering to provide NU scholarships to the Mythical First Five of girls basketball at the Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete on April 21-27.

The other day, NU senior women’s basketball team manager Johnson Martinez and coach Patrick Aquino met with Abalon and his deputy Francis de la Cruz at the DepEd head office to formalize the offer of scholarships.

“We offered scholarships to the Mythical First Five of girls basketball at the Palaro in 2011,” said Martinez. “Three accepted and they are now playing with the NU senior team. One of them Gemma Miranda became the UAAP Rookie of the Year. The other two are Afril Bernardino and Janet Sison. We are hoping to revive the scholarship program and also sponsor the girls basketball team to the Asean School Games just like we did through Ever Bilena in 2010.”

Aquino said if the DepEd approves, the girls team to represent the country in Vietnam will be composed of outstanding players of the coming Palaro and other recruits from Metro Manila high schools. Martinez said Ever Bilena will study the possibility of sponsoring the girls basketball tournament in this year’s Palaro.

Myanmar to build high-speed internet for SEA Games

Source: Eleven

Myanmar will build a high-speed internet cable network in time for the upcoming 27th South East Asia Games in December this year.

The fibre-optic cable network is expected to carry up to 30 Gigabytes per second of data transmission and will connect Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw where the games will be held. The government has already signed an agreement with three Japanese companies; Sumitomo, NEC and NTT to build the network.
