20 hotels to provide accommodation for 2015 SEA Games

Source: Channel News Asia

SINGAPORE: Athletes, officials and delegates coming to Singapore for the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games next year will be housed in a "Village in the City", instead of in university hostels.

The Singapore Southeast Asian Games Organising Committee (SINGSOC) on Wednesday announced that 20 hotels within the Havelock, Tanjong Pagar/Chinatown and Marina areas will be awarded the tender to provide accommodation for those attending the 2015 SEA Games.

Over 7,000 athletes and officials will be staying in these hotels.

Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore at Zhongshan Park are two of the 20 hotels that have been chosen to house athletes and officials during the SEA Games next year.

Located in Balestier, the hotels have 789 rooms in total and all of them are on offer.

The hotels said having a shopping mall within their premises and other amenities could have helped them win the bid.

Norman Cross, executive assistant manager for F&B at Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore at Zhongshan Park, said: "The Balestier heritage trail... offers guests a look, or a glimpse into Singapore's past. And to promote Singapore's food culture, there are so many eateries nearby, which are well renowned."

The hotels added that they are confident of giving guests a good experience, even if they haven't handled groups on such a large scale before.

Mr Cross said: "We will be working very closely with the SEA Games officials on this note. Definitely, it is a little bit more stringent, but I believe we can foster a very close working relationship with the SEA Games Council to provide our foreign guests a welcoming and enjoyable experience."

Fifty-one hotels participated in the tender, and others selected include the Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore and Marina Bay Sands.

Based on the concept of “Celebration in the City”, SINGSOC said it decided to house the athletes and officials near the Singapore Sports Hub and areas where the majority of the sports competitions and fringe events will take place.

Other criteria included the number of hotel rooms offered, catering services and the availability of function rooms and other supporting amenities.

"The 28th SEA Games will celebrate and showcase sport against the backdrop of Singapore's stunning city setting.

“We want our SEA Games athletes and officials to enjoy our city's unique flavours, sights and sounds, even as they focus on competing at their best," said Lim Teck Yin, chairman of the exco committee at SINGSOC.

"We are very appreciative of the hotels' support and effort for this historic event. The 28th SEA Games is an important event in our calendar of celebrations for Singapore's 50th anniversary next year, and for the entire Southeast Asian region.

“We are confident that our SEA Games athletes and officials will have an enjoyable stay and return home with wonderful memories of the Games and Singapore," added Mr Lim.

To ensure that housing athletes and officials in hotels would be a cost-effective arrangement, SINGSOC said it had carefully evaluated the alternative of a centralised athlete's village in university hostels.

Its study showed that the costs would be comparable because of the need to install additional arrangements for the Games, such as security fencing, and to restore conditions on return.

The committee said the hotels which participated in the tender had also "taken onboard their role in this national effort and had offered attractive packages".

The 28th SEA Games will be held from 5-16 June 2015, with Singapore Sports Hub as the main venue for the Games.

Indonesia “Proud” to Host 2019 Asiad if Selected

Jakarta. Indonesia said Saturday it would be “proud” to host the 2019 Asian Games after sports sources indicated it was the favorite to take on the event after Vietnam withdrew.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung announced on Thursday that his country was pulling out of hosting the 2019 Games because of economic “difficulties.”

Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) members confirmed to AFP that Indonesia is now the leading candidate but said more negotiations would be needed.

“The Indonesian people would be proud of being the 2019 Asian Games host country after it held the Games several decades ago,” the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) official Ade Lukman told AFP. ”It is very important for Indonesia if we are nominated as the Asian Games host country, as it will help create stronger interest in sports here and hopefully it will help improve the achievement of our athletes competing in the event.”

Staging the world’s second biggest multi–sport event after the Olympics requires hundreds of millions of dollars of investment.

“The Jakarta authorities have asked questions about the cost,” said one OCA official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Indonesia is one of three countries that have since shown an interest in hosting the event, the other two are also from East Asia, a source familiar with negotiations told AFP.

“Indonesia, which was beaten by Vietnam in the hosting vote in 2012, is seen as the strongest candidate,” the source said.

Lukman said he was awaiting official confirmation of the situation from the OCA.

If Indonesia is selected as host, the event will take place in the country’s second biggest city of Surabaya on eastern Java island, he added.

Lukman said that the city administration has expressed its seriousness in building a new sports facility in order to meet requirements for holding the international sports event.

OCA director general Husain Al Musallam said earlier that a final decision on the new Games host country will be made on September 20 in Incheon, South Korea, which will host this year’s Asiad at the same time, according to Indonesia staged the Asian Games once before, in Jakarta in 1962.

Indonesia Favorite to Take on 2019 Asian Games

Dubai. Indonesia is favorite to take on the 2019 Asian Games after Vietnam’s withdrawal because of the cost, Asian sports sources said Friday.

A decision on the new country will be made on September 20 in Incheon, South Korea which will host this year’s Asiad at the same time.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung announced on Thursday that his country was pulling out of hosting the 2019 Games because of economic “difficulties.”

Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) leaders warned Vietnam this year that they were already falling behind in preparations, officials said.

Staging the world’s second biggest multi-sport event after the Olympics requires hundreds of millions of dollars of investment.

“Three countries have shown an interest in hosting the 2019 Asian Games following Vietnam’s withdrawal,” an Asian sports source familiar with negotiations told AFP.

Indonesia is one and the other two candidates are also from East Asia, the source added without naming the other two.

“Indonesia, which was beaten by Vietnam in the hosting vote in 2012, is seen as the strongest candidate,” the source said.

OCA members confirmed that Indonesia is the leading candidate but said more negotiations would be needed.

“The Jakarta authorities have asked questions about the cost,” said one official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Indonesia staged the Asian Games once before, in Jakarta in 1962.

OCA director general Husain Al Musallam said the Asian council will decide the new Games host on September 20, during the OCA General Assembly in Incheon.

The 2014 Asian Games start in Incheon on September 19.

“The OAC knew about the decision and is happy that Vietnam made it public on April 17 because delaying it would have made it difficult for the OAC and Vietnam to select another venue,” Musallam told AFP. ”After the Games were awarded to Hanoi, the OAC carried out three inspection visits to the Vietnamese capital and made it known to the local organizers that the conditions were not being met.”

Hanoi signed a contract with the OCA setting out the conditions, including the building of stadiums and infrastructure for staging the Games.

“The last meeting between the OAC and the Vietnamese Olympic committee took place on March 31 and the OAC made it clear during that meeting that the 2019 Asian Games have to be held to the highest standards,” the official said.

Hanoi was chosen in 2012 to stage the 2019 event which attracts more than 10,000 competitors though the number of events is being cut.

Vietnam’s prime minister blamed a lack of experience in hosting large sporting events and “difficulties in the country’s socioeconomic situation” as the reasons for withdrawing from the 2019 Games.

“Vietnam will apply for the hosting of ASIAD at an appropriate time,” an official statement said.

Vietnam’s Olympic Committee initially proposed a budget of about $300 million for the Games. But as the country recovers from an economic crisis, the government slashed the sum.

Asian Games bets to come from Le Tour finishers

Source: Manila Times

The Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling) will use the 2014 Le Tour de Filipinas as basis to select riders for the 17th Asian Games scheduled in September in Incheon, South Korea.

PhilCycling President Abraham Tolentino said the top finishers in the Le Tour de Filipinas have the advantage of getting slots for the Asian Games. The Le Tour de Filipinas will be held on April 21 to 24 beginning in Clark, Pampanga.

“The Le Tour de Filipinas has always been a determinant on how strong our cyclists are because it is an international race participated in not only by the best cyclists in Asia but also potent riders from around the world,” said Tolentino.

The Philippines has 10 riders from continental team 7-Eleven Road Bike Philippines and Philippine Navy-Standard Insurance.

Former Le Tour de Filipinas winner Baler Ravina, Mark Galedo, Cris Joven, Marcelo Felipe and Mark Julius Bordeos are in the 7-Eleven Road Bike while Philippine Navy Standard Insurance has Santy Barnachea, Joel Calderon, Lloyd Lucien Reynante, Jorge Oconer and John Renee Mier.

There are 15 teams registered in the International Cycling Union competing in this edition, which got full support from PhilCycling Chairman Bert Lina and Air21.

The continental teams are based in Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Ireland and Iran. There are also three clubs from Mongolia, Australia and Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates national team.

Besides Baler, who won in 2012, the other winners in the Le Tour de Filipinas were David McCann of Ireland (2010), Rahim Emami of Iran (2011) and former Asia’s No. 1 Ghader Mizbani of Iran (2013).

Vietnam tops tally at SEA karatedo champs

Vietnam is topping the medal tally with six golds, eight silvers and nine bronzes at the third Southeast Asia Karatedo Championships, which kicked off in the Mekong city of Can Tho on April 16.

With the largest team of 59 men and 30 women, Vietnam took home golds in kata and kumite performances for both juniors and adults.

Thailand is placed second with four golds, two silvers and one bronze while Indonesia ranks third, bagging three golds, one silver and one bronze.

The two-day tournament gathers 203 martial artists from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. They are competing for 39 sets of medals.

Vietnam targets top swimming prizes at 2014 Asian Games

Source: Vietnam Plus/VNA

The 2014 Asian Games (17th ASIAD) promises to be memorable for Vietnamese swimming as top Vietnamese swimmers Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and Hoang Quy Phuoc are prepared to compete for top honours, said the Nhan Dan (People) online newspaper.

Although it is one of the two fundamental Olympic sports, swimming has never been a strength of Vietnam’s in Asian competitions, even at the Southeast Asian (SEA) level. However, the situation has improved remarkably in the last three or four years thanks to the emergence of a generation of outstanding young athletes like Anh Vien, Quy Phuoc, Tran Duy Khoi, Lam Quang Nhat and Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen.

These Vietnamese swimmers have been gradually re-drawing the regional swimming map with their sparkling achievements in the last two SEA Games editions. After the two gold medals won by Quy Phuoc at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, Vietnam performed even at last year’s 27th SEA Games in Myanmar with five gold medals, three of which went to Anh Vien.

In 2012, Anh Vien became the first Vietnamese swimmer to reach the Olympic standard after qualifying for the London Olympic Games. These historic accomplishments have contributed to improving the status of Vietnamese swimming in the region, putting it on par with Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

With these positive signals, Vietnamese swimmers are strongly expected to create stirs at the 17th ASIAD, which takes place in Incheon, Republic of Korea from September 19 to October 4. Previously, the nation’s best ASIAD result was achieved by Vo Thai Nguyen at the 2010 Guangzhou ASIAD as he finished eighth among eight competitors in the men’s 200m butterfly finals.

According to Dinh Viet Hung, General Secretary of the Vietnam Aquatic Sport Association, Anh Vien and Quy Phuoc are expected to make the top five in all their registered disciplines. They are also entrusted to make the podium in some of their stronger events. In addition, Duy Khoi and Quang Nhat are seen as likely finalists in their favourite disciplines, Hung said.

It is truly good news for Vietnamese swimming that the athletes has made such important improvements since the latest ASIAD four years ago.

Hopes are pinned on Anh Vien to win the historic first medal for Vietnamese swimming at the upcoming 17th ASIAD in her favourite, the 200m backstroke. At the 27th SEA Games, the 17-year-old from Can Tho city broke the Games’ record in this discipline with a time of 2:14.80, 5.08 seconds slower than that of the bronze medal finisher at the 16th ASIAD.

She also broke the record in the 400m individual medley, another of her favourite disciplines, with a time of 4:46.16. However, this time still falls over four seconds short of the time that won bronze at the 16th ASIAD.

Although he won the men’s 200m freestyle gold medal at the 27th SEA Games in a time of 1:50.64, top Vietnamese male swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc also failed to keep up with the time for the 16th ASIAD bronze, which was 1:47.73.

These statistics are evidence of the clear performance gap that exists between the SEA Games and the ASIAD. In order to bridge the gap and achieve the best preparation for the 17th ASIAD, Anh Vien has been training in the United States since early January. This is the third year running that Vien has taken part in such an extended US training course.

Following a period of physical preparation, Anh Vien showed off her amazing talent by winning four gold and two silver medals at the recent 2014 Florida Swimming Spring Senior Championship in Orlando, Florida. She then continued to stun the US swimming scene by grabbing four more gold and two additional silver medals from her six registered events at the 2014 NASA Junior National Championship. These victories are really good news for the national swimming team, as Vien is seen as one of the stars going into the 17th ASIAD in Incheon this September.

Her male teammate, Hoang Quy Phuoc, also rallied to an extremely impressive warm-up at the 2014 National Short Course (25m) Swimming Championships that concluded in Thua Thien-Hue province on March 23, winning 15 gold medals (11 individual and four relays) and smashing national records in the men’s 400m freestyle and 200m butterfly. This month, the ‘Han River otter’ will return to China for an intensive training course in preparation for the ASIAD.

Other promising young talents, including Duy Khoi, Quang Nhat and Kim Tuyen, will also receive key investments this year, moving towards further targets like the 2016 Olympics Games and the 2019 ASIAD.

2015 SEA Games will cost less than YOG: Singapore sports chief

Source: Yahoo Singapore

The 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will not cost Singapore as much as the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

Sport Singapore (formerly Singapore Sports Council) CEO Lim Teck Yin made the promise at a press briefing on Monday to provide updates on the regional competition, to be held in the Republic from 5 to 16 June next year.

“The final budget will be clarified by the end of the year… (But) we can say it’s less than YOG,” he said, referring to the 2010 fiasco which saw the costs of the inaugural YOG held in Singapore to balloon three times over its original budget of S$104 million. The final cost of running the two-week Games came up to a total of S$387 million, a figure which came under heavy scrutiny from both media and Singaporeans alike.

But Lim assured reporters that the upcoming 28th edition of the SEA Games, to be hosted by Singapore for only the fourth time in history, would be “cost-effective”. While he didn’t specify the exact figure, he revealed that around 70% of the budget has been expended with just over a year left to the Games.

‘Accessible’ pricing

Additionally, Singapore will not look to ticketing revenue from the SEA Games as a means to “make money”, said Lim.

Only about half of the competition venues will be ticketed, with prices ranging from below S$10 to below S$30.

Sport Singapore said ticket prices will be tagged to current entry level pricing driven by demand, with the aim of striking a balance between yield and attendance.

“We’re designing the Games… to make it accessible, but we need some sort of policy, as a means to manage seating,” Lim added.  “We don’t want to price in a way that compromises sports events after. For example, for football, we take reference from what the FAS (Football Association of Singapore) charges now.”

The exact list of ticketed and non-ticketed venues is still being finalised.

A Games in the city

Up to 15 locations have been lined up for use by the 36 sports and some 7,500 athletes and officials expected to descend on Singapore come June next year.

These include three “cluster” venues in Marina, EXPO and Kallang; with the latter pointing to the near-completed Singapore Sports Hub that will host table tennis, badminton, swimming, track and football events amongst others.

Water sport events like canoeing, rowing and traditional boat race are to take place in the Marina Cluster while EXPO will see martial arts action from boxing, silat, wushu and more.

Other event venues scattered across the island include shooting at Yishun SAFRA, bowling at Orchid Country Club, gymnastics at Bishan, rugby at The Padang and triathlon at East Coast.

The 2015 SEA Games is also set to mark possibly the first time there will be no traditional “Games Village” to accommodate athletes and officials. Instead, three hotel zones – in Havelock, Tanjong Pagar/Chinatown and Marina – will spearhead a “Village-in-the-City” concept to centralise activity over the one and a half weeks.

Sport Singapore is further planning for a one-year countdown to the SEA Games to begin in June this year, coinciding with the official launch of the Sports Hub.
