BRUNEI is hoping to host a “spectacular” 7th ASEAN Schools Games when the tournament kicks off on Nov 21.
A total of seven sports will be contested at the event which will be
hosted by Brunei for the first time; athletics, badminton, golf,
netball, pencak silat, sepak takraw and swimming.
“I want you all to know that we in Brunei are working hard in making
sure that all students from participating member will have the best
possible time in pursuing their sporting glory,” said the Permanent
Secretary of Core Education at the Ministry of Education, Dr Hj Junaidi
Hj Abdul Rahman, at yesterday’s 7th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG)
chef-de-mission meeting.
“Brunei Darussalam is the seventh country to host the ASEAN School
Games, and despite experiencing the current global economic downturn, as
hosts we hope to deliver a spectacular event with high spirit and
enthusiasm.
“So apart for it being a highly competitive sporting event for our
youngsters, it is our hope that the 7th ASG would also be remembered as a
platform to realise our motto - One Vision, One Identity, One
Community,” he added during the meeting at the Orchid Garden Hotel.
Chef-de-missions from eight countries - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia,
Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam -attended the
meeting which was chaired by Hj Abdul Rahim Derus, the Director-General
of Education at the Ministry of Education.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the running of the tournament that is scheduled to run from Nov 21-29.
Among the aims of the ASG are to foster greater collaboration among
school students in ASEAN member countries and spur social progress, the
spirit of partnership and equality in the region through cooperation in
the field of sport.
It also aims at providing opportunities for school athletes to interact and engage in cultural exchanges within ASEAN.
The first edition of the event was held in Thailand in 2009.
Last year’s sixth edition in Marikina City, Philippines saw the sultanate win two silver and two bronze medals.
The nation’s best achievement in the annual games was in Hanoi,
Vietnam in 2013, when Brunei collected two silver and eight bronze
medals.
