10th Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships 2016

The 10th Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships 2016 was held from December 21 to December 24 in Makassar-South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The event showcased 7 events and was participated by host Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Singapore and Vietnam teams were the big winners of this edition of Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships

The Men's team event was won by Vietnamese team. They defeated powerhouse Singapore with the score of 3-2 in their final team match. Vietnamese team was composed of Dinh Quang Linh, Doan Ba Tuan Anh, Nguyen Anh Tu, and Nguyen Duc Tuan. While team Singapore was represented by Chew Zheyu Clarence, Poh Shao Feng Ethan, Edric Lim Zheng Jie, Maxxe Tay Ming Han and Beh Kun Ting.  Singapore team ended for third place to win bronze medal.

In Women's team event, Singapore settled for silver while Vietnam displayed their prowess for this event. 

For Men's Singles, Vietnam's Nguyen Anh Tu defeated his Singaporean rival Poh Shao Feng Ethan 4-0 to win the gold medal. Tu defeated Ethan with the score of 11-6, 11-7, 11-5, and 11-9. While Ethan settled for silver medal. Bronze medal was awarded to Dinh Quang Linh of Vietnam.

For the Women's Singles event, it was all Vietnam versus Singapore teams in the semi-finals. Zhang Wanling of Singapore lost to Mai Hoang My Trang of Vietnam to settle for bronze while on the other match, Singapore's Lin Ye beat Nguyen Thi Viet Linh of Vietnam. Linh settled for bronze. In gold medal match, Singapore Lin Ye defeated Nguyen Thi Viet Linh, 4-1 to win the gold medal.

In Men's Doubles, it was Singapore's Clarence Chew and Ethan Poh who emerged as champion. They defeated Dinh Quang Linh and Nguyen Anh Tu of Vietnam who only settled for silver medal. Indonesia's GIlang Maulana & Ficky Supit Santoso and Singapore's Maxxe Tay & Edric Lim who failed to win at the semi-finals settled for bronze medals.

In Women's Doubles,  Lin Ye and Goi Rui Xuan of Singapore won the gold medal defeating Lilis Indriani & Gustin Dwi Jayanti of Indonesia in the final match. The Indonesian team only settled for silver medal. Bronze medal was also awarded to Kharisma Nur Hawwa & Hani Tri Azhari of Indonesia.

In Mixed Doubles, Singapore's Clarence Chew and Lin Ye won the championship defeating Ficky Supit Santoso & Gustin Dwi Jayanti of Indonesia who settled for silver medal.

The Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships is being held biennially since 2006.

47th World Petanque Championships 2016

The 47th World Petanque Championships 2016 was held from December 1 to December 4 in Antananarivo, Madagascar. 

The tournament was participated by 48 countries including our Southeast Asian countries. 

Among our SEA Nations who successfully reached the podium were Cambodia and Thailand. 

In Men's Singles - Precision Shooting, it was a historic gold medal for Sok Chan Mean of Cambodia. He defeated French rival Boursicaud Bruno, 36-29 at the final round. While Thailand's petanque player Thanaborn Sangkaew settled for bronze medal together with Italian Diego Rizzi. 

The 2016 championships also featured Men's Triples event but none of our SEA petanque players made the medal podium.  

Petanque is a non-Olympic sport but is a regular sport in SEA Games and will be featured at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

ASEAN Basketball League 2016-2017 Update

9th BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games 2016

The 9th BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games 2016 was held in East Kalimantan, Indonesia from December 7 to December 12 2016. The opening ceremony was held at the Convention Hall Sempaja Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The participants consisted of 15 contingents, namely Brunei, Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan), Philippines (Palawan and Davao), Indonesia (East Kalimantan (161), Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Kaltara, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi and the Moluccas and Australia (Darwin). 

Twelve (12) sports were held such Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Futsal, Golf, Karatedo, Lawn Tennis, Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw and Table Tennis.

Philippine International Chess Open 2016

The Philippine International Chess Open 2016 was held at the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel in Olongapo City from December 6 to December 11. The tournament was organized by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). A Challenger division or category was also held at the same time. 

Three Southeast Asian countries played in this tournament - host Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. 

Among the 39 chess players, only Vietnam made it to the podium. 

It was Vietnamese master Trần Tuấn Minh who settled for second place with a accumulated total points of 6.5. His points was same as the tournament winner Wang Hao of China. 

For host Philippines with 21 players, it was Haridas Pascua who ranked 12th as the top finisher for the Philippines with 5 points. While Singapore Qing Aun Lee of Singapore finished 30th place. 

The tournament was participated by 11 countries including Armenia, Belarus, China, Georgia, India, Russia and Uzbekistan.

3rd Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships 2016

The 3rd Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships 2016 was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at the National Complex. 

Vietnam topped the tournament with 15 gold medals. Host Cambodia placed second over-all with three (3) golds, 10 silver and 17 bronze medals. While other Southeast Asian teams like Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Singapore finished the tournament with only a silver and a bronze medals.

Some of the medalists from host Cambodia were SEA Games gold medalist Don Sao beating Cheah Wenjian of Malaysia to win gold in the 97kg division.  Also, Yin Bona (Cambodia) defeated Singaporean wrestler Eddy Zulqarnain to claim a gold medal in the 57kg event. And the last gold contributor for Cambodia was Chhoeun Chheang defeated Singapore’s Mohamad Firdaus. 

Cambodia became the second country to host the regional event after Singapore who hosted the inaugural and second editions.

It was Malaysia who was selected to host the third edition but Malaysia is busy for the preparation of the upcoming SEA Games this 2017. Then Cambodia accepted the responsibility to host the tournament as this nation has good wrestlers.

1st ASEAN Deaf Football Championship 2016

The 1st ASEAN Deaf Football Championship (ADFC) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 4 to December 10. It was participated by seven (7) Southeast Asian teams.

The seven team-nations were divided into two groups. Group A was composed of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos and Thailand. While Group B was composed of host Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

In the group stage phase, Thailand was on top of Group A with 9 points followed by Indonesia with 6 points. For Group B, it was Malaysia who topped the group with 6 points while Vietnam settled second among the three-team group with 3 points. (See: Group Stage Fixtures and Scores below)

On the semi-finals, Group A winner Thailand battled Group B's runner-up Vietnam while Group B winner Malaysia battled Group A runner-up winner Indonesia. 

As for the results of the semi-finals, Thailand defeated Vietnam with a commanding 4-0 win. On the other semi-final, Malaysia outscored Indonesia, 10-1. 

The finals between Thailand and host Malaysia saw  the superb talents of both teams wanting to win the first edition of the ASEAN Deaf Football Championship.

In the end, Thailand showed their supremacy on the field beating host Malaysia, 3-1.

Brunei, Philippines and Singapore withdrew to participate on the said tournament.

2016 World Bowling Singles Championships

The 2016 World Bowling Singles Championships was held in Doha, Qatar last December 2 to December 9. It was participated by fifty countries including four Southeast Asian nations - Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. 

Malaysia was represented by Muhammad Rafiq Ismail and Syafiq Ridhwan for Men's Singles while Esther Cheah & Li Jane Sin for women's event. Philippines was represented by Ivan Dominic Malig and Raoul Miranda in Men's event while Marian Lara Posadas and Krizziah Lin Tabora in Women's event. 

In Men's event, Muhd Jaris Goh and Marcus Kiew represented Singapore while in women's event it was Hui Fen New and Shayna Ng. And from Thailand, Annop Arromsaranon & Yannaphon Larpapharat competed in Men's event while Kritsanakorn Sangaroon and Thanchanok Vilailak competed in women's event.

But among these sixteen (16) bowlers from Southeast Asia, three (3) were successful in their campaigns. Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia took the silver medal in Men's Singles while Singaporean bowlers New Hui Fen and Shayna Ng captured silver and bronze medals respectively in the women's event. 

Malaysia's Muhammad Rafiq Ismail only scored 205 against Denmark's Jesper Agerbo 256-points in the finals to settle for silver medal. While silver medalist New Hui Fen of Singapore gathered 195-points against 214 of Kelly Kulick from USA in the women's event final. 

The first Southeast Asian bowler to medal at the World Bowling Singles Championships was Esther Cheah of Malaysia at the inaugural edition in Limassol, Cyprus last 2012. She placed third and won bronze medal.

The next World Bowling Singles Championships is to be held hopefully in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
