National men’s artistic gymnastics team heads to China to prepare for upcoming SEA Games

PETALING JAYA, April 20 — The national men’s artistic gymnastics team will head to China for a three-month stint as part of their preparations for next year’s SEA Games.

“It will be good for them,” said Malaysian Gymnastic Federation (MGF) secretary, N Shanmugarajah.

“We don’t have any specific target for the boys but we need to start our preparations early. All six gymnasts will go to China as we want to give them good exposure before the Games.

“They will train in Beijing and Junming.”

Mohd Hamzaruddin Nordin said he is looking forward to the China stint.

“I really hope to be selected for next year’s Games as I failed to get a medal in Singapore last year.

“If I get the nod then Kuala Lumpur will be my third SEA Games as I also competed in 2011 in Palembang,” he said.

“We do not have targets but we feel we can to win gold next year.”

Besides Hamza, the other five elite gymnasts going to China are Chau Jern Rong, Jeremiah Loo, Azroy Amierol Jaafar, Muhammad Abdul Azim Othman and Zul Bahrin Mat Asri.

Jeremiah delivered a surprise silver medal in the horizontal bar for the men’s only SEA Games medal.

The focus has been on the women’s team, who ended a 14-year drought to win the team gold at the Singapore SEA Games last year.

Farah Ann Abdul Hadi just missed out on qualifying for the Rio Olympics at last week’s qualifiers but is likely to be on the reserve’s list.

Two weeks ago, Farah Ann won the country’s first medal at a World Cup series after winning silver in the uneven bars in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

A day later, Tan Ing Yueh (balance beam) and Tracie Ang (floor exercise) won the country’s first gold medals.

OCM Still Studying Appeals For SEA Games Events - Tunku Imran

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is still studying the appeals for 222 events from 41 sports to be included in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

After listing 342 events from 34 sports in the provisional list on Feb 17, the OCM has the difficult job of determining the final list for the 29th SEA Games.

OCM president Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar said the Technical Committee will meet in May to discuss the appeals before announcing the final list during the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) meeting on July 13-14.

"The meeting will discuss the merit of all the events but we still have to follow the criteria. Some (Sports Associations) wanted to discuss, some do not, while some have very good justification.

"We continue to be open, if they want a meeting, then we meet. They have to give good reasons and arguments why they want the particular events in the SEA Games," he told Bernama.

Tunku Imran, who is also the SportsExcel chairman said this when met after Family Day Walkathon organised by SportsExcel in conjunction with its 25th anniversary at Bukit Jalil Sports Complex here, today.

On April 1, the OCM said they received appeals for 114 men's events, 100 women's events and eight mixed events via the National Olympic Councils (NOCs) of 10 Southeast Asian countries and from National Sports Associations (NSAs).

Among the sports are cycling (BMX and mountain bike), shooting (pistol, rifle, shotgun and practice pistol), contract bridge, canoeing/kayaking, fencing, floorball, judo, kempo, muay, sports climbing, tarung derajat, traditional boat race and vovinam.

The SEA Games is participated by 11 countries - Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Timor Leste and Malaysia.

The 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games will be the sixth SEA Games to be held in Malaysia, after 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989 and 2001.
