ASEAN University Games: Myanmar Teams Will Participate In The Games In Singapore

Union Minister for Education Dr. Myo Thein Gyi handed over the Victory flag to Myanmar selected university team for 18th ASEAN University Games at the ceremony in Diamond Jubilee Hall in Yangon, Sunday.

Myanmar teams will participate in football, track and field and Sepak Takraw with 37 players in 18th ASEAN University Games that will be from July 9th to 19th in Singapore.

Myanmar started to compete the 15th edition in Thailand in 2010 and ranked the 11th. However, the team could take place at the 8th in 2012 and 2014.

The upcoming games will include 16 sports and Myanmar will compete in 3 sports events. Myanmar teams have prepared well and trained the players very hard, according to Rector of Dagon University Dr. Hla Htay who is also University National Sepak Takraw Team Manager.

Rector, Dagon University, Dr. Hla Htay: We expect a lot more than last year. We focus on football, Sepak Takraw and track and field. In track and field, we expect to break the last year’s record. We will try to grab more medals than the previous years.

As the ASEAN University Games allow only the university students who are under-26 to participate and selection of the players for the Games are very limited.

This year, the selected University football team was formed with some young professional players of Myanmar National League to get more achievements.

Goalkeeper, Selected University Football team, Pyae Sone Chit: We trained nearly two months for the ASEAN University Games. We will leave from Yangon on July 7th and the group matches will kick off on July 9th. In group events, we have to face Thailand, Laos and Timor Leste. I think Thailand will be tough opponent. But, we will try with our best to pass the group matches.

Aside from this year event, the 19th ASEAN University Games will be hosted in capital Naypyitaw, in December 2018.
