2016 World Bowling Singles Championships

The 2016 World Bowling Singles Championships was held in Doha, Qatar last December 2 to December 9. It was participated by fifty countries including four Southeast Asian nations - Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. 

Malaysia was represented by Muhammad Rafiq Ismail and Syafiq Ridhwan for Men's Singles while Esther Cheah & Li Jane Sin for women's event. Philippines was represented by Ivan Dominic Malig and Raoul Miranda in Men's event while Marian Lara Posadas and Krizziah Lin Tabora in Women's event. 

In Men's event, Muhd Jaris Goh and Marcus Kiew represented Singapore while in women's event it was Hui Fen New and Shayna Ng. And from Thailand, Annop Arromsaranon & Yannaphon Larpapharat competed in Men's event while Kritsanakorn Sangaroon and Thanchanok Vilailak competed in women's event.

But among these sixteen (16) bowlers from Southeast Asia, three (3) were successful in their campaigns. Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia took the silver medal in Men's Singles while Singaporean bowlers New Hui Fen and Shayna Ng captured silver and bronze medals respectively in the women's event. 

Malaysia's Muhammad Rafiq Ismail only scored 205 against Denmark's Jesper Agerbo 256-points in the finals to settle for silver medal. While silver medalist New Hui Fen of Singapore gathered 195-points against 214 of Kelly Kulick from USA in the women's event final. 

The first Southeast Asian bowler to medal at the World Bowling Singles Championships was Esther Cheah of Malaysia at the inaugural edition in Limassol, Cyprus last 2012. She placed third and won bronze medal.

The next World Bowling Singles Championships is to be held hopefully in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
