The 3rd Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships 2016 was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at the National Complex.
Vietnam topped the tournament with 15 gold medals. Host Cambodia placed second over-all with three (3) golds, 10 silver and 17 bronze medals. While other Southeast Asian teams like Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Singapore finished the tournament with only a silver and a bronze medals.
Some of the medalists from host Cambodia were SEA Games gold medalist Don Sao beating Cheah Wenjian of Malaysia to win gold in the 97kg division. Also, Yin Bona (Cambodia) defeated Singaporean wrestler Eddy Zulqarnain to claim a gold medal in the 57kg event. And the last gold contributor for Cambodia was Chhoeun Chheang defeated Singapore’s Mohamad Firdaus.
Cambodia became the second country to host the regional event after Singapore who hosted the inaugural and second editions.
It was Malaysia who was selected to host the third edition but Malaysia is busy for the preparation of the upcoming SEA Games this 2017. Then Cambodia accepted the responsibility to host the tournament as this nation has good wrestlers.
