🥋 9th Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships 2017

The 9th Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships was held in Atyrau, Kazakhstan from April 19 to April 21.

Five Southeast Asian countries took part in this youthful event. These were Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

And as expected, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam athletes shined in this kyorugi tournament.

Thailand won 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals and ranked third (3rd) overall. The Philippines on the other hand captured 4 silver and 1 bronze medals and placed fifth (5th) overall while Vietnam won three (3) bronze medals.  

A total of 246 athletes from 24 countries of Asia participated in this Asian championships with a total of  twenty (20) events.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and Indonesia Asian Games Organising Committee (INASGOC) have agreed to reduce the number of events from 493 to 431 for the 18th Asian Games hosted by Jakarta-Palembang in Indonesia.

🏐 SMM 2017 Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championships

The SMM 2017 Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championships was held from April 14 to April 17 at Samila beach in Thailand. A total of 60 teams - 32 pairs in men's from 17 countries while 28 pairs from 14 countries in the women's side collided in a 4-day beach volleyball tournament.

Our Southeast Asian (SEA) countries who were present in this event were Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Vietnam and host Thailand. 

In the men's event which was divided into 8 pools, the middle eastern countries like Iran and Qatar were very dominant inside the court. But our SEA teams was challenged as three teams reached the quarterfinal round. These were teams from Indonesia (Ramadan/Prabadi & Rachmawan/Asfiya) and Thailand's duo of Inkiew and Padsawud.

Of the three teams who advanced in the quarterfinals, only the pair of Ade Candra Rachmawan and Mohammad Asfiya of Indonesia won and advanced to the semifinal round. The duo defeated Jefferson and Cherif of Qatar in a thrilling match, 21-17, 7-21 and 15-13. These two pairs battled already for the gold medal match a couple of days ago in the SMM AVC Beach Tour EST Cola 2nd Satun-Pak Bara Open 2017. Qatar won the gold medal while Indonesia settled for silver medal in that previous tournament . 

And because of the turn of event and sweet revenged of Indonesia against Qatar, Rachmawan and Asfiya faced the pair of McHugh and Schumann from Australia in the semifinal match. It was Indonesia's dominance who prevailed in the semifinals as Australia surrendered two sets to the red and white flag, 21-18 and 21-16.

In the gold medal match for men, Indonesia battled a strong team from Iran. All sets were closely tight but Iran's Rahman Raoufi and Bahman Salemi Injehboron  kept their sight for victory and win the title, 22-20, 12-21 and 15-12. Indonesia settled for silver medal.

In the women's event, only two teams from Southeast Asia advanced in the quarterfinal round. These were Dhita Juliana and Putu Dini Utami of Indonesia and the tandem of Rumpairuet Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak of Thailand.

Dhita and Putu defeated the duo of Suzuki and Ishii of Japan, 21-19 and 21-14 to advance in the semifinal round. While Thailand's duo of Numwong and Hongpak was unlucky to reach the semifinals as they were defeated by Bell & Laird of Australia, 21-16 and 21-15.

Indonesia's journey to the finals was stopped by China's Wang and Yue, 16-21, 18-21 putting them to play against another semifinalist loser Australia (Bawden/Clancy) for a bronze medal match.

The battle for third place was not a one-sided game as Indonesia snatched a set from the Australian duo, 8-21, 21-17 and 8-15. Indonesia just settled in 4th place.

🏸 OUE Singapore Open 2017

The results of OUE Singapore Open 2017 is surprising as our Southeast Asian badminton players were halted to reach the final events except in the mixed double event.

Held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from April 11 to April 16, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and host Singapore were among the participating nations of this 6-day tournament.

As days of the competition nears its end, the chances of our SEA players also nears to end as only team from Thailand reaches the finals of the mixed doubles event.

Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh partnered with Sapsiree Taerattanachai battled the tandem of Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong of China on the last day of competition. It was a good first set for the Thai duo winning the set  but the following two games were won by the determined Chinese team. China won the title beating Thailand, 19-21, 21-16 and 21-11. Thailand team settled as runner up which is the highest placement by a Southeast Asian badminton players in this tournament.

In the same event, Kian Meng Tan and Pei Jing Lai of Malaysia also reached the semifinals but was defeated by Thailand's Puavaranukroh and Taerattanachai, 18-21, 21-11 and 21-14.  

Meanwhile, other Southeast Asian players who reached the semifinal round were Indonesians - Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the men's singles event, Berry Angriawan partnered with Hardianto Hardianto and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the men's doubles.  

🎳 43rd MWA-Singha Thailand International Open 2017

Malaysia and Singapore bowlers were crowned champions of the 43rd MWA-Singha Thailand International Open Bowling Championships Men's and Women's Open Masters 2017.  The event was held at Blu – O Ratchayothin in Bangkok, Thailand from April 5 to April 16. 

Zulmazran Zulkifli captured the men's title after beating Rafiq Ismail 242-161 in the all-Malaysian final match.

Zulmazran pocketed the top prize of THB 300,000 which is approximately US$8,700 while his fellow bowler Rafiq settled for half of the top prize money. Meanwhile, Hardy Rachmadian of Indonesia placed third to win 75,000 Thai Baht.  

PWBA Rookie of the Year - New Hui Fen of Singapore won the women's open masters title beating Syaidatul Afifah of Malaysia, 233-198 in the final match.

Sharon Limansantoso of Indonesia and Sin Li Jane of Malaysia placed third and fourth respectively. While Tanaprang Sathean of host Thailand landed for 5th place.   

Bowling will be featured at the 29th Southeast Asian Games to be hosted by Malaysia this coming August. Eleven (11) gold medals are at stake for this sport at the biennial meet. 

🏓 23rd ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships

Five of the Southeast Asian (SEA) countries took part in the 23rd ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships held in Wuxi, China from April 9 to April 16. These were Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Our Southeast Asian (SEA) teams' campaign in this regional tournament were not successful as some only reached the quarterfinal round. 

In men's singles event, Gao Ning of Singapore was able of reaching round of 16.  He was defeated by Koki Niwa of Japan in that tournament phase and was unable to advance in the quarterfinals. Zhendong Fan of China won the gold medal for this event. 

In the women's singles event, Singapore's Tianwei Feng garnered the highest placement from Southeast Asia reaching the quarterfinal round but was defeated by China's Yuling Zhu. Feng failed to advance to the semifinal round. Miu Hirano emerged as the champion for this event defeating China's Meng Cheng in gold medal match.

In the men's doubles, another Singaporean paddlers reached the quarterfinal round. Gao Ning and Pang Xue Jie was unable to advance in the semifinals as the duo suffered defeat against the China's tandem of Fan and Lin. 

Unluckily in the mixed team and women's doubles events, no teams from Southeast Asia reached the quarterfinals. Southeast Asian (SEA) teams had an early exits in the round of 16 stage. Singapore and Thailand had the best performances among the SEA nations in this Asian championships.

🏀 3rd Asian University 3x3 Basketball Championships 2017

The 3rd Asian University 3x3 Basketball Championships (AU3x3BC) 2017. April 12 to 16, 2017 at Gem In Mall, Cyberjaya, Malaysia.

Southeast Asian teams who entered to participate in this tournament were Indonesia (men's team only), Philippines (men & women), Thailand (men & women) and host Malaysia with two teams each in men's and women's events.

Of the four nations mentioned above, Thailand and Malaysia were the only teams who managed to win medals. 

In the women's division, Thailand battled against Macau for the bronze medal. The score was 14-12 at the end of regulated time in favor of Thailand. Thailand was awarded bronze medal while the gold and silver medals went to Chinese Taipei and China respectively.

In the men's event, gold medal was won by Mongolia after beating China, 17-13 in the finals match. While the bronze medal was won by host Malaysia after defeating Thailand in a thrilling match. The match ended with scores of 21-20.   

Meanwhile, the Philippines did not register any win in both men and women's event. They were defeated by Iran (14-21), Indonesia (18-19), Mongolia (14-21) and Malaysia-B (18-21) in men's pool A while the women's side experienced dominance from Hong Kong-A (10-14), Thailand (10-21) and Taipei (7-21). 

Indonesia on the other hand, registered 3 wins against Iran (21-18), Malaysia (21-19) and the Philippines (19-18) while surrendered to China (10-16) and Mongolia (15-17).

Adding more excitement in the event was the Shootout and dunk contest. The winner for the dunk contest for women's side is Pin Lo of Taipei while host Malaysia added another success as Tan Wei Jie won the shootout contest for the men's category.

In the dunk contest, Mongolia's Naranbaatar won the title. 

In the first edition of this championships last 2015, the Thailand team placed third in the women's event out of eight (8) participating teams while Philippines placed last in the nine-team men's event. China won both titles in their home soil.

In the second edition which was held last year, Thailand-A (Sripathum University) settled for silver medal in the women's event. Thailand-B placed 4th overall.

🏀 ASEAN Basketball League - Finals Game 1

🎯 1st Asian University Archery Championships 2017

The 1st Asian University Archery Championships 2017 was held in Nilai, Malaysia from April 12 to April 16. A total of 55 competitors from 6 countries competed in this inaugural event.

Three Southeast Asian (SEA) countries participated in this tournament. These were the Philippines, Singapore and host Malaysia. 

In the men's team recurve, four teams competed and automatically placed them in the semifinals. Our SEA teams Singapore and Malaysia competed against each other while China and Chinese Taipei battled in the semifinal matches.

Team Malaysia composed of Bakri Atiq Bazil, Rosli Muhamad Fareez and Omar Nazir victoriously won over Singapore's Keith Teo Kee Hui, Woon Teng Ng and Teo Wei Xiang Sion to advance in the gold medal match. Unfortunately, they failed to win the gold and settled for silver medal. The score was 5-1 in favor of Chinese Taipei. On the other side, Singapore won over China to cop the bronze medal.

In the three-nation women's recurve team event, Malaysia was unable to beat Chinese Taipei in the gold medal round. The score was 6-0 in favor of the Taiwanese. Meanwhile, China received the bronze medal after losing to Malaysia in the semifinals, 0-6. Malaysia women's team was composed of Abdullah Azuanis, Mohamed Hamzah Ezryn Meza and Mohd Fadzil Ummi Aisyah.

In the recurve mixed team event, Malaysian tandem of Rosli Muhamad Fareez and Mohamed Hamzah Ezryn Meza was beaten by China in the semifinal round but won over Singapore's Quah Kai Zhi and Keith Teo Kee Hui to win third place in the bronze medal match.

Only two teams were entered in the men's compound team event, Chinese Taipei and host Malaysia. Both were thru for the finals. The gold medal went to unstoppable Chinese Taipei and silver went to Malaysia. The score was 220 to 213.

Malaysian team was composed of Abd Rahim Amirul Amin, Ishak Mohd Firdaus and Mohd Kamro Mohd Hakhiki.

The women's compound team event, host Malaysia settled for silver medal while Singapore got the bronze medal. Gold medal was won by Chinese Taipei.

In the mixed compound team event, Singapore's Christina Gunawan and Han Teng Ang settled for bronze medal after losing to Malaysian tandem of Mat Salleh Fatin Nurfatehah and Ishak Mohd Firdaus in the semifinal round. While Malaysia brought home silver medal after losing to Chinese Taipei in the gold medal round, 152-155 scores.

In the men's recurve event, Atiq Bazil Bakri of Malaysia reached the semifinals but failed to advance in the finals losing to Chun-Heng Wei of Chinese Taipei. He then competed in the bronze medal match but still unlucky for the elusive medal. 

In the women's event, our SEA archers only reached the quarterfinal round.

Chinese Taipei copped all the medals in both men's and women's recurve events.

In the men's compound event, Singapore's Han Teng Ang placed third after beating Malaysia's Mohd Firdaus Ishak in the bronze medal match. A total of seven (7) archers from three countries competed in this event and Hsiang-Hsuan Chen of Chinese Taipei won the gold medal.

In the women's compound event, Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh won the lone gold medal for Malaysia. She defeated Taipei's Ting-Hsuan Lee in the finals, 144-139.  

Chinese Taipei won the overall championship with 9 gold and couple of silver and bronze medals. Malaysia came second overall with 1 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medals. China in 3rd place while Singapore came 4th overall with 4 bronze medals. Philippines and Nepal were medal-less in this inaugural tournament.   

This tournament was a test event for the upcoming 29th SEA Games in August host by Malaysia.

SEAG Schedule Change

 

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) – It has taken years of meticulous planning but the 2017 Southeast Asian Games was forced to make a last-minute change to its schedule after organisers discovered its closing ceremony clashed with an important annual religious holiday.

Just months before the start of the biennial event in August, authorities announced the closing ceremony in Muslim-majority Malaysia will be a day earlier than scheduled, due to the clash with Islamic festival Hari Raya Haji.

The celebration will now be held on August 30, instead of August 31 which is the eve of the key holiday for Muslims, Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said.

Khairy told reporters on Tuesday that the change of date would not be an issue for the games which begin on August 19.

“The closing date of the SEA Games has been brought forward by one day, from August 31 to August 30. This is for us to celebrate a (Muslim) religious event … which falls on August 31,’’ the minister said.

The Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships 2017 was held from April 1-10 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. And our young Southeast Asian fencers were present at this 10-day sword fighting tournament.

Amita Berthier made a medal podium for Singapore. She got the bronze medal in the women's foil - cadet category. Ninety-one (91) participants competed in this event. Last year, Ywen Lau of Singapore made history by winning gold medal in the women's individual sabre cadet.

Congratulations to Philippines' Lee Vann Corteza for dominating the 2017 World Pool Series–Kamui Challenge 8-Ball Championship held at the Steinway Cafe Billiards in Astoria Queens in New York City, USA.

Asian Youth Chess Championships 2017

Three Southeast Asian countries competed at the 2017 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. These were Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.

Twelve title events were contested in the standard chess from Match 31 to April 8 and Vietnam wood pushers were triumphant in this youthful tournament.

In the Standard chess events, Pham Tran Gia Phuc of Vietnam won the U8 open with 7.5 points after the ninth round. His fellow Hoang Minh Hieu shared second place in the U10 standard chess with India's Tanmay Jain and Uzbekistan's Fakhriddinxujaev Umarxon who accumulated a total points 6.5. Ashraf Artin of Iran won the gold medal in this event.

Still in standard chess event,  Nguyen Thien Ngan of Vietnam got a total of 6.5 points to place third in the U12 girls category. 

In the Blitz category, Vietnam delegation had a total of four silver and two bronze medals.

Hoang Minh Hieu was second in the U10 Open event with seven points after nine matches. Sindarov Islombek of the hosts won the gold with 7.5 points.

In the Girls’ U12, Nguyen Thien Ngan won a silver medal with seven points, while her teammate Tran Dang Minh Quang finished second in the Open discipline.

Vietnam continues its success as Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong in the Girls’ U14 earned as many points as Indian Jishitha Daghli, but she came in second due to her lower parameter.

The Vietnamese wood pushers also earned two bronze medals courtesy of Pham Tran Gia Phuc in the U8 Open and Nguyen Quoc Hy in the U12 Open.

⚽️ 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers

Five Southeast Asian teams competed at the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers. These were Philippines in Group A, Thailand in Group C and Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam in Group D. 

Group A matches were held in Tajikistan while Group C matches were held in Palestine. Group D matches on the other hand were played in Vietnam. The top finisher in each group automatically qualify for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2018 to be held in Jordan.

Thailand was first to secure a place in the Asian Cup 2018 after topping Group C. In  Group A, Philippines also secured a spot in the Asian Cup in Jordan after a draw with Bahrain. Philippines is now second in ranking and still has a remaining game against Jordan who tops group A. Jordan as host of the Asian Cup has automatic spot next year giving the runner up in group A a spot in the Asian Cup.

And lastly to place a spot in the eight-team tournament next year is Vietnam who tops Group D. Vietnam and Myanmar was undefeated until they met in their final game in group D. The luck was with Vietnam scoring 2-0 against the Burmese team.     

Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam are the teams from Southeast Asian that will compete in the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup and have a chance to move forward to the FIFA Women's World Cup.

🏐 SMM AVC Beach Tour EST Cola 2nd Satun-Pak Bara Open 2017

The SMM AVC Beach Tour EST Cola 2nd Satun-Pak Bara Open 2017 was held from April 8 to April 11 in Satun, Thailand. 

15 teams from four (4) Southeast Asian nations competed in this four-day tournament. These were Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and host Thailand.

In the men's event , Ade Candra Rachmawan and Mohammad Asfiya of Indonesia reached the gold medal match against Jefferson & Cherif of Qatar. The match ended with the Qatar team taking away the gold medal. Indonesia just settled for silver medal.

Meanwhile, Thailand's bet Nattanon Inkiew and Sattawat Padsawud was the only team from Thailand who reached the quarterfinals in the men's event. However, they were beaten by the Qatari team. 

In the women's event, Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee of Thailand won the bronze medal by outscoring the team from Japan, 21-16 and 21-17. Local duo of Rumpairuet Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak also reached the quarterfinals but was defeated by the same Japanese team.

🏋️‍ 2017 IWF Youth World Championships

Held in Bangkok, Thailand from April 4 to April 10, the 2017 IWF Youth World Championships was participated by 445 young weightlifters from 52 countries.

Our Southeast Asian (SEA) countries that took part in this world championships were Indonesia with 10 weightlifters, Laos with 3, Malaysia with 14, Vietnam with 13 and host Thailand with 16 young weightlifters.

Leading Southeast Asia was Teerapat Chomchuen of Thailand for winning two gold medals in men's 50kg event. Chomchuen lifted 91kg in the snatch while he lifted 125kg in the clean & jerk discipline for gold medal. His total lift of 216kg was enough to disposed Vietnam's Nguyen Quoc Bao Le who lifted a total of 215kg for gold medal. Le settled for silver medal.

In the same event, his twin brother Natthawat Chomchuen (Thailand) also grabbed a silver medal in the snatch discipline with 94kg lift. Gold medal was won by Le of Vietnam with a best  lift of 96kg. In the Clean & jerk discipline, Teerapat won the gold with 125kg lift.

In the men's 62kg event, Indonesia's Muhammad Halim Setiawan grabbed the bronze medal overall.

Setiawan lifted a total weight of 267kg.  Setiawan also got the bronze medal in the snatch department lifting 121kg.

Another Thai lifter Chotima Buachatturat landed on top as she won two bronze medals in the women's 48kg event. She won the bronze medals in the clean & jerk discipline and in the overall total lift. Her total lift was 158kg. In this same weight category, Thi Chuc My Luu of Vietnam managed to clinch bronze medal in the snatch discipline.

In the women's 58kg event,  Ailada Emdu of Thailand clinched the gold medal in the snatch discipline with her lift of 88kg. But her total combined lift of snatch and in the clean & jerk was not enough for her to catch another medal.

And in the women's +75kg event, Thailand's Supatchanin Khamhaeng took the bronze medal in the clean & jerk department.

Overall, Thailand won three golds, 1 silver and three bronze medals. On the other hand, Vietnam captured 1-gold, 1-silver and 2-bronze medals while Indonesia finished the competition with a lone bronze medal. Laos and Malaysia did not win any medal.

 

⚽️ U14 Asian Dream Football Tournament 2016/17

The U14 Asian Dream Football Tournament 2016/17 were participated by 26 teams and clubs from Thailand (12 teams), ASEAN (Vietnam team & Cambodian team ), Youth Leagues (4 teams), Partnership teams (2 teams) and Japan (6 teams). 

At the end of many matches, Chonburi FC of Thailand won the the championship beating Shimizu S-Pulse from Japan, 1-0 in the finals. 

Individual awards were also given in the tournament. The "Most Valuable Player" (MVP) award went to midfielder Kittiphong Khetpara of Chonburi FC while the "Top Goal Scorer" award was given to Vo Nguyen Hoang of PVF Vietnam who made a total of 8 goals.

Three (3) "ASEAN Dream Player" awards were given to Kittiphong Khetpara of Chonburi FC, Vo Nguyen Hoang of PVF Vietnam and Kittichai Yaidee from Buriram UTD. These three young talents will have an opportunity to train football skill with top J.League club.

The tournament was a one-week competition that ended last March 26.

🏸 CELCOM AXIATA Malaysia Open 2017

Only two final events were reached by our Southeast Asian badminton players at the CELCOM AXIATA Malaysia Open 2017. 

The six-day tournament which was held from April 4 to April 9 in Sarawak, Malaysia was participated by players from countries like Denmark, India, China, England, Hong Kong, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Australia, Egypt, Japan, Germany and Russia. 

Southeast Asian countries who took part in this badminton tourney were Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and host Malaysia.  

And as mentioned above, two final events were reached by our SEA players. 2016 Rio Olympian Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia met another Olympian Lin Dan of China in the men's singles event. The two met already in the semifinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics where Lee Chong Wei took home the success into the finals.

But this time around, Lin Dan was able to revenge against his Malaysian rival. Lin Dan easily defeated Lee Chong Wei in two straight matches, 21-19 and 21-14. Lee Chong Wei settled runner up. The revenge was sweet but this two badminton legends are friends.

In other event, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamulio of Indonesia also made it to the finals and won the men's doubles against China's Haifeng Fu and Siwei Zheng. It was uneasy win for the white and red flag team as the Chinese got the second game 21-14. While first and last sets went to Gideon and Sukamulio to win the men's doubles event, 21-14 and 21-12.  

🥊 Thailand International Boxing Championship (Kings Cup) 2017

The Thailand International Boxing Championship (Kings Cup) was slated from April  3 to April 9. 

Southeast Asian boxers from Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines and host Thailand participated in the high level boxing tournament. 

The first day of competition saw the Philippines as medal contender of the competition as it flawlessly won all their bouts. Unfortunately, on the second day of the competition, Philippine boxers suffered defeats against their rivals as only one boxer made thru the next round. 

It was Joel Bacho in the men's welterweight (69kg) category who reached the semifinals. He fought against Kazakhstan's Sadriddin Akhmedov but failed to win the match. Bacho settled for bronze medal and the only medal for team Philippines in this tournament.

On the other side, Thailand was assured of 6 medals as six Thai boxers advanced in the semifinal round. Of the six boxers, four reached the finals as the two boxers settled for bronze. 

The bronze medalists were Yaoddam Ammarit in the men's bantam weight (56kg) category and Tee Terapong in the 75kg class. 

In the last day of competition, Ongjunta Tanes won the men's flyweight (52kg) class title via walkover win against Uzbekistan boxer.

In the men's bantamweight (56kg) category, Butdee Chatchai of Thailand prevailed against his North Korean rival. He defeated Hyo Nam Jo with 5-0 cards.

Thailand continues its triumph in boxing as Masuk Wuttichai got all judges votes in men's light welter (64kg) class and won the gold medal. He defeated Uzbekistan's Elnur Aduraimov in the finals.

Unfortunately, Wongsuwan Somchay did not have the same fate as his fellow Thai boxers. Somchay failed to grabbed the title in the men's lightweight (60kg). He just settled for silver medal. Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu of Mongolia took the gold medal.

A total of 107 boxers from 18 countries participated in 10 weight class categories of this tournament. Only the Philippines and Thailand from Southeast Asia entered the medal tally board.

Philippines was the overall champion in boxing at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore.

🏸 YONEX - SHERA - ROZA - BTY U19 Junior International Challenge 2017

The YONEX - SHERA - ROZA - BTY U19 Junior International Challenge 2017 was held from April 4 to April 9 in Bangkok, Thailand where two of our junior badminton players took two championship titles.

In the men's singles event, Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn took home the title beating Malaysia's Fong Hau Sim on Sunday's finals. Vitidsarn dominated the games 21-18 and 21-10.

In the same event, two Thais reached the semifinals. These were Saran Jamsri and Ruttanapak Oupthong who shared the position of third place.

Indonesia as one of the powerhouses in badminton clinched the women's singles title. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung defeated local bet Pattarasuda Chaiwan in a commanding scores of  21-11 and 21-14 in the finals. Malaysia's Qi Xuan Eoon placed third in the same event.

Also reaching the semifinals and placing third place were Woratat Jianpipatgun and Warit Sarapat of Thailand in the men's junior doubles. Agatha Imanuela and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia shared at third place with Malaysian Sueh Jeou Tan and Ee Wei Toh  in the women's doubles event.

While two Indonesian duos shared the third spot in the mixed junior doubles event. These were the duo of Renaldi Samosir with Hediana Julimarbela and Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob partnered with Ribka Sugiarto. 

Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam also participated in this six-day tournament.

🏐 SMM 11th Asian Boys U19 Volleyball Championship 2017

The SMM 11th Asian Boys  U19  Volleyball Championship 2017 was held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from March 28 to April 5. Eleven (11) countries took part of the tournament which was divided into four pools. Aside from host Myanmar in Group A, Thailand also took part in this competition and was group in Pool C.

Myanmar's first match was against Hong Kong. They easily defeated Hong Kong in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-17, 25-15. While their last match for Pool A preliminary was against Australia. All sets were tight-close except for the 4th set. The host proved that they were very prepared as they defeated the Australian team 3-1 sets - 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22.

Thailand on the other hand had different fate in pool C. They won their first game against Sri Lanka, 25-10, 25-15, 25-23 but they lost their second game against 2014 silver medalist Japan, 21-25, 17-25, 18-25.

Both teams were to advance for the quarter finals but needed to go thru the qualification round for seeding.

Myanmar U19 Team

In the qualification round, Myanmar and Thailand collided on the first day of April after a one day rest. Thailand defeated host Myanmar in a commanding 3-set win, 27-25, 25-18, 25-23.

The next day of competition saw both team competed against Japan and Australia. Japan out-powered host Myanmar in 3 sets, 25-15, 25-9 and 25-16. While the team from down under disposed Thailand in 3-1 sets, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17.

After the qualification round, Thailand was seeded second in Pool E to face seeded 3 in pool F which is Iran while Myanmar was seeded fourth to face  pool F top seeded Korea. Both did not advance to the semifinals as Thailand and Myanmar suffered defeats in three straight sets in the quarter-finals. Korea defeated Myanmar, 25-11, 25-14, 25-12 while Iran defeated Thailand 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19.

Thailand U19 Team

Both Thailand and host Myanmar were relegated in 5th-to-8th places and faced each other for the second time. And again, it was Thailand who emerged victorious in a three setter match. Thailand outscored Myanmar, 25-15, 25-18, and 25-17.

In the final day of competition, Thailand faced Chinese Taipei for 5th place. The Chinese team defeated Thailand with scores 25-21, 25-23, and 25-21. Thailand settled for 6th place overall.

For 7th place battle, host Myanmar played against Australia. Unfortunately, Myanmar suffered another defeat as they surrendered to Australia, 14-25, 23-25, 19-25. Myanmar landed in 8th place overall.
