Three countries to feature in all 38 sports in 2017 SEA games

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — Three countries namely Thailand, Singapore and hosts Malaysia are set to feature in all 38 events contested in the 2017 SEA Games to be held this August.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar also said that four main clusters would host a large number of events except for two sports — equestrian endurance and sailing — which would be held outside Klang Valley.

The clusters are Kuala Lumpur Sports City which is located in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim and also Putrajaya, which will host the water games — water-ski and wakeboard.

“Terengganu will host the equestrian endurance events while Langkawi will host the sailing events...So far we have received 8,777 entries for the upcoming SEA Games,” he told reporters after attending a coordination meeting with the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games Secretariat, here, today.

On the same note, Tunku Imran said the first meeting of Chef-de-Mission (CDM) of the contingents will be held from Feb 18-19 here to discuss a few issues related to the SEA Games such as including a technical handbook, transportation and competition venues.

Tunku Imran pointed out that during their visit, the CDMs would be brought to visit all four clusters including the newly-built Nilai Velodrome in Negri Sembilan, which will host the track cycling, road races and also BMX events.

“From there, they (CDM) will return to their countries and brief their respective sports association and team managers on what exactly will happen in August,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017 Secretariat chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said some of the competition venues could only be tested by the national athletes after they are handed over by the contractors.

He said the Kuala Lumpur Sports City would only be handed over to the secretariat in June.

“If we are unable to organise pre-games competitions, will ensure testing can be done on the facilities, timing systems and others. Some of the venues were already ready last year.

“Like for Judo, the facilities and counting system for points were ready and tested in December. As for the others we are planning to do the testing from May to June...so far, we have not received requests from other countries on venue testing,” he said.

The 2017 SEA Games will be held from Aug 19-31.

Chess will make its debut in the 2017 ASEAN Para Games to be held from Sept. 17 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Chess is considered as one of the popular sports within the ASEAN Paralympic community and its inclusion in the biennial Games was based on the Expression of Interest (EOI) findings conducted by the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF), which endorsed the sport in a special meeting with the Malaysia Organizing Committee (MASOC) in Malaysia last month.

The meeting was attended by APSF President Maj. Gen. Osoth Bhavilai and Secretary-General Charnvit Munikanond, MASOC Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Seri Zolkples Embong and Technical Chairman John Ng, who is also the deputy president of the Malaysian Paralympic Council.

The 9th ASEAN Para Games has a total of 16 sports namely archery, athletics, badminton, boccia, chess, cycling, football (5-a-side and 7-a-side), goalball, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, tenpin bowling, volleyball (sitting), wheelchair tennis and wheelchair basketball.

The events and disciplines in each sport will be finalized after consultation with their respective International Federations (IFs) and technical delegates.

An estimated 3,000 athletes and officials from 11 countries are expected to participate in the 2017 ASEAN Para Games which will have the biggest number of sports to be contested since the inaugural Games hosted by Malaysia in 2001. Thai boxer Chatchai Butdee (Right)
2015 SEA Games boxing over-all champion Philippines and boxing powerhouse Thailand will not just only focus at the upcoming 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games but also focusing at the World Championships in Germany.

The Philippines and Thailand has always been the countries to watch when it comes to boxing among the SEA nations. The Philippines at the last SEA Games in Singapore produced five golds while Thailand had lone gold medal. And these two teams always give good fights at the Asian and World Championships levels.

But this coming August, it will be hard for both Philippines and Thailand whose boxers they will send for the 2017 SEA Games and for the World Championships. The Kuala Lumpur SEA Games is almost coinciding with the World Championships. SEA Games will be contested from August 19-31 while the world championships will be played from August 25 to September 5.

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and the Thailand Boxing Association (TBA) will surely divide its boxers into two sets of teams for both important boxing tournaments.

The Thailand team has its new Cuban coach who arrived last November 2016. They are training hard for other international tournaments in preparation for SEA Games and for the World Championships.

On the other hand, the Philippines is also on its training facilities in a high altitude place where it camped its boxers before going to several tournament abroad in preparation also for SEA Games and the World Championships.

At the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, only 6 weight categories will be featured for men's events and each country is only allowed to send four boxers in this SEA Games edition. While the women's events were removed by SEA Games organizing committee.

Host Malaysia did not win any medal at the 2015 SEA Games while it had 1 silver medal and three bronze medals at the 2013 Myanmar SEA Games.

“The government is serious in supporting our athletes and the national sports associations,” Ramirez said. “By harmoniously working together, we can make a difference in improving Philippine sports. “

Ramirez, said sports science would be integrated in the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) to be launched on Jan. 16.

He also announced that 12 regional satellite training centers will be set up within the period of six months, with the hiring of 60 regional sports coordinators.

To hasten grassroots sports development, PSC laid out its program linking with local government units (LGUs) and to the education department aimed at strengthening community and school-based sports, respectively.

Philippines still favorite to win 2 Golds in Basketball

Gilas team at Stankovic Cup
All 11 nations who will be competing at the 29th South East Asian Games are busy gearing up in their training and preparation for this biennial event. And one of the sports to be featured at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games is basketball.

Two gold medals are at stake for the upcoming SEA Games. One in men's event and the other one is in women's event.

At the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, the Philippines who won the gold medal in men's event sent their best college players with the addition of naturalized player Marcus Douthit. The team had a tough battles during the semi-final and in the gold medal matches.

But despite its difficult road to reach the gold medal, they still able to win the championship. The silver medal went to Indonesia while the bronze medal went to team Singapore.

In women's event, Malaysia won the gold medal followed by Indonesia and Thailand respectively.
At the coming 2017 SEA Games, the Philippines is still seen to be the team to beat for both events.

Its women team was recently crowned as the champion of the 9th SEABA Championship for women last year beating all the 2015 SEA Games teams who won medals and they recently progress to Level I status at the Asian women's championship.

Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are likely to be their tough rivals for the gold medal at the 2017 SEA Games.

As for its men's team, a mixed of amateur and professional basketball players are said to suit up the team. The team's focus is to beat its improving neighboring countries in SEA Games and in qualifying SEA zone tournament in order to advance at the 2017 FIBA-Asia Championship.

This will be a tough one for Philippine team because some SEA nations are really catching up with them. Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore are still the teams who can steal the SEA Games men's basketball title.
