🏸 YONEX Polish Open 2017

Two championship titles were won by our Southeast Asian badminton players at the recently concluded YONEX Polish Open 2017. 

Malaysia's Jian Wei Tan captured the men's singles event title defeating Brazilian Ygor Coelho 21-13, 20-22 and 21-10 in the finals. Before going to the finals, Tan defeated Toby Penty of England in the semifinals, 21-14 and 21-15.

Meanwhile Indonesian tandem of Yulfira Barkah and Meirisa Cindy Sahputri defeated the duo of Hsin Tien Chang and Chien Hui Yu of Chinese Taipei in the finals. The red and white team duo finished the match in 2-1 sets, 21-12, 14-21 and 21-14.

Also, another Malaysian player Ying Ying Lee reached the finals of the women's singles event. Unfortunately, she was beaten by Japan's Yui Hashimoto, 13-21, 21-19 and 21-10. In the same event, Indonesian Hanna Ramadini reached the semifinals but was defeated by Hashimoto, 21-17 and 21-13. 

 

This tournament was held from March 23 to 26.

6th FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup 2017 to be held in Chengdu, China on 28 June - 2 July 2017. Good luck 🇮🇩 🇵🇭 🇸🇬!!!

⚽️ Dubai Cup U23 – UAE International Football Tournament

Three (3) of our Southeast Asian teams took part at the 2017 Dubai Cup U23 – UAE International Football Tournament. These countries were Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. This is part of their preparation for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in August.

At the end the tournament, Thailand emerged as the champion of Dubai Cup 2017 with 9 points. The Thai team managed to collect three wins and losing only to China. Meanwhile, Malaysia and Singapore ended 5th and 6th place respectively in the round robin format tournament.

10th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup 2017

The 10th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup took place at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar from March 22-25, 2017. The qualification rounds were held last March 22 and 23 while the finals was held on March 24 and 25 respectively where eight gymnasts qualified for the final in each apparatus.

Bringing glory was le Thanh Tung of Vietnam who captured the gold medal in the men's vault event. His score was 14.733 enough to win this men's individual event. Silver medal went to Armenia's Artur Davtyan while the bronze medal went to Finland's Heikki Saarenketo.

In the the parallel bars event, two Vietnamese gymnasts qualified for the finals. Phuong Thanh Dinh and Phouc Hung Pham settled 5th and 6th in the finals. Their scores were 14.600 and 14.466 respectively in the finals. 

Our Southeast Asian athletes from Indonesia and Vietnam only participated in the men's events.

12th Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championships

The 12th Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championships 2017 took place at the Ilagan City Sports Complex in Isabela, Philippines with colorful and youthful opening ceremony. The athletic competition was held from March 27 to March 28.

The competition was participated by young and promising athletes from eight (8) Southeast Asian countries - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Timor Leste, Thailand, Vietnam and host Philippines. 

Vietnam dominated the two-day competition finishing with 13 golds and 8 silver medals. While host Philippines managed to snatch 1 gold, 9 silver and 15 bronze medals.

24 sports in SEA Games to be broadcasted live, Khairy says

PETALING JAYA, March 28 — Sports enthusiasts in the region are be entertained with high quality live coverage during the upcoming Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, as 24 sports out of 38 sports contested at the Games will be broadcasted live.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the number comprised live coverage for more than 60 per cent of the total sporting events from different venues, through televised broadcasting and Internet streaming from Aug 19-31.

“This will be the most live coverage that we will have in the entire history of the Games. So far I am quite happy with the cooperation we are receiving from the regional broadcasters.

“The Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) want to make sure that we put on the best show for the excitement of spectators in the venue as well as viewers from home through high quality broadcasting,” he told reporters after opening the 2nd host broadcaster meeting here, today.

Fifteen broadcasters from seven Asean countries as well as one international broadcaster, International Games Broadcast Services (IGBS) from Switzerland, attended the meeting.

Khairy, who is also the MASOC chairman said broadcasters had to play a crucial role, in showcasing the exciting moments, human drama, joy of victory and agony of defeat of the athletes during the SEA Games to the public around the globe, especially in Asean.

On the venues preparation, Khairy said the Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Bukit Jalil is 80 per cent completed and scheduled for handover in July, while the Nilai Velodrome is to be opened next month.

Meanwhile, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honourary secretary Datuk Low Beng Choo said with the establishment of SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) Broadcasting Committee last week, the main goal was to have the Games reach as many people as possible in the region.

“In line with the SEA Games theme of ‘Rise Together’, we want to make sure the high quality of the broadcast and it goes to as many countries as possible including Timor Leste.

“The schedule for broadcasting had been fixed...It not only covers focus sports for Malaysia but also those for other countries and other less popular and bnews sports such as speed skating,” she said.

The 24 sports selected for live coverage are athletics, aquatics (diving, swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo), football, cycling (track), bowling, billiards and snooker, rugby 7s, weightlifting, table tennis and gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic).

Also selected are ice skating (speed), boxing, muay, carate, taekwondo, pencak silat, wushu, basketball, badminton, netball, sepak takraw, squash, archery and hockey. ­— Bernama

🏸 CIPUTRA HANOI - YONEX SUNRISE Vietnam International Challenge 2017

The CIPUTRA HANOI - YONEX SUNRISE Vietnam International Challenge 2017 was held in Hanoi, Vietnam from March 21 to March 26.

Six Southeast Asian nations competed in this badminton tournament. These were Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and host Vietnam.

And as expected our SEA athletes captured some titles and some reached the semi-finals.

Pompawee Chochuwong of Thailand captured the women's singles event title after disposing Vietnam's Thi Trang Vu. Chochuwong defeated Vu in two straight sets in the finals, 21-17, 21-16. In the same event, Indonesia's Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin shared third place with Vietnam's Thuy Linh Nguyen after they were eliminated in the semi-finals.

Host Vietnam celebrated as local Tien Minh Nguyen won the men's single title. He defeated Thailand's Khosit Phetpradab in the finals, 21-14 and 21-17.

Only two titles were captured by our SEA athletes and the rest were won by non-Southeast Asian countries.

Thailand's Trawut Potieng and Nanthakarn Yordphaisong reached the finals of the men's doubles event but failed to capture the title. They were defeated by the tandem from India. Sharing third place were the tandems of Hendra Aprida Gunawan and Markis Kido of Indonesia and Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Jagdish Singh of Malaysia.

Also reaching the finals were the duo of Joyce Choong and Jing Yi Tee of Malaysia in the women's doubles event. The duo was defeated by Japanese players. Third place were shared by Indonesia's Rahmadhani Hastiyanti and Vania Arianti Sukuco and mixed NOC tandem of Ririn Amelia of Indonesia and Ana Ching Yik Cheong of Malaysia.

And lastly in the mixed doubles, Indonesia's Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini reached the finals but fell short against the tandem of Chinese duo. Fadhilah and Anggraini only settled as runners up. Also placing in third were fellow Indonesian Andika Ramadiansyah and Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso.

All in all, it was a good performance of our Southeast Asian athletes in this six-day tournament.

2017 Asia Archery Cup - Stage 2

The Asia Archery Cup 2017 - Stage 2 was held in Bangkok, Thailand last March 20 to March 25. The event was participated by 244 athletes and 71 officials from 26 countries from Asia and outside Asia like Russia, Iceland and Australia.

The eight (8) countries from Southeast Asia (SEA) that took part in this tourney in the capital city were Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and host Thailand.

Our SEA athletes shines in both men's and women's individual events and were present in all finals of the individual events. Also, they collected couple of medals in the team events.

Leading the SEA region was Thi Dac Loc of Vietnam. She defeated Taipei's Shih-Chia Lin in the final match and won the gold medal. On the other hand, Philippines' Nicole Marie Tagle was defeated by Bangladesh's Shamoli Ray in the bronze medal match of the same event.

However, the Philippines made a podium finish after Amaya Amparo  Cojuangco settled for silver medal in women's individual compound event. She was defeated by Iran's Parisa Baratchi in the gold medal match. 

Malaysia also made an impressive campaign in this competition as Khairul Anuar Mohamad settled for silver medal in men's individual recurve event. The gold medal was won by Chinese Taipei's Yu-Cheng Deng.

Also, in men's individual compound, Malaysia's Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki also settled for silver medal. Iran's Esmaeil Ebadi won in the finals against Mazuki. On the other hand, Malaysia's Khambeswaran Mohanaraja was defeated by Russia's Alexander Dambaev who won the bronze medal in the same event.

In the compound mixed team, Malaysian strikes another silver medal courtesy of Salleh Fatin Nurfatehah Mat and Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki. The gold was won by Chinese Taipei's archers.

The last day of competition was set for the remaining team events. Malaysia as the number one country in Southeast Asia in the sport of archery added a bronze medal in their collection. The bronze medal came from the men's compound team composed of Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki, Khambeswaran Mohanaraja and Zulfadhli Ruslan. They defeated the team from Singapore, 232-227.

Malaysia continued its good performance as it reached the bronze medal match in women's recurve team event. But Vietnam spoiled and snatched the bronze medal from Malaysia as team Vietnam defeated Malaysia in a very close match, 5-4.  

Meanwhile, Myanmar snatched a bronze medal in the women's compound team event. They defeated the team from Iran in the bronze medal match, 225-214. The team was composed of Ngeain Aung, Hla Hal San and Sein Yah Yaw.   

Host Thailand, did not go home empty handed as the men's recurve team captured the gold medal beating Russia, 6-2 in the finals.

Over-all, Team Vietnam tops the Southeast Asian teams with one gold and one bronze medals. Vietnam finished their campaign 4th over-all. Thailand finished 5th over-all with a gold medal. Malaysia in 6th place with 3 silver and 1 bronze medals. Philippines ranked 10th with a silver medal and Myanmar with a lone bronze medal placed 11th. Indonesia, Singapore and Laos did not make it in the medal board. Chinese Taipei tops the tally with 5 gold medals.

🏒 2017 IIHF Men's Challenge Cup of Asia (Top Division)

Six nations competed at the 2017 IIHF Men's Challenge Cup of Asia - Top Division.

The event took place at the skating rink of the Central Plaza Grand Rama IX shopping mall (Ice Rink Arena) in Bangkok, Thailand from March 17 to March 23 for Top Division.

Among the Southeast Asian nations that saw action in this tournament were Malaysia, Singapore and host Thailand in Top Division.

Thailand and Singapore battled out for third rank on the last day of competition. It was Thailand that shown an aggressive offense as they blanked Singapore in their final match, 12-0. They got the third place with three wins and two defeats. Singapore placed 4th over-all. On the other hand, Malaysia ended the tournament win less.

United Arab Emirates tops the tourney with a clean record of 5 wins  followed by Mongolia with 4-1 win-loss cards.

Meanwhile, the Philippines will compete in the 2017 IIHF Men's Challenge Cup of Asia - Division I to be held in Kuwait next month.

🏐 Thailand and Vietnam Going to World Volleyball Championships Qualification

The road to the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Championships for Men and Women already ignited when the draw happened at the Dusit Princess Srinakarin Hotel in Bangkok two days ago.

Two countries from Southeast Asia will take part of the qualification round for Asian zone. These are Vietnam and Thailand. Vietnam team will only compete in the women's event while Southeast Asian powerhouse Thailand will compete in both men's and women's events. 

For men's event, Thailand was drawn in Pool B together with New Zealand, Japan, Chinese Taipei and host Australia. The volleyball war of Pool B is scheduled on July 12 to 16, 2017.  While in Pool A, China, Korea, Qatar and a qualified team from Central Asia will collide with host Iran from August 10 to 14 in the capital city of Tehran.

Only the top two teams from both pools will qualified for the 24-team FIVB Men's Volleyball Championship 2018 which will be held by co-hosted Italy (finals) and Bulgaria between September 10 and 30 in 2018. 

For the women's side, Thailand will host Pool B Asian zone qualification from September 20 to 24, 2017. Aside from the host, Pool B is composed of Korea, DPR Korea, Iran and our Southeast Asian team Vietnam. On the other pool, China, Chinese Taipei, Australia and Fiji will collide with host Kazakhstan. 

Same with the men's event, only the top two teams from both pools will advance in the final round to be held in Japan from September 30 to October 21 in 2018. 

2017 Jujitsu World Championship U18 & U21

The 2017 Jujitsu World Championship U18 & U21 was held at Galatsi Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece from March 17 to March 19.

Some of our Southeast Asian Ju Jitsu athletes participated in this world championships and made an impact in this one of a kind martial art sports.

Among our Southeast Asian martial artists who won medal were Vietnam's Duo Hong Son and Thailand's Kinaree Adkins.

Duo Hong Son won bronze medal in the men's under-21 -56kg while Kinaree Adkins also won bronze medal in the women's -44kg in under-18 category.

At the end of the event, Russia won the over-all championships with 10 golds, 9 silvers and 26 bronze medals. Germany came second while United Arab Emirates placed third over-all.

• 16th Asian Women's Handball Championship 2017

🤾‍ 16th Asian Women's Handball Championship 2017

The 16th Asian Women's Handball Championship 2017 was held in Suwon City, South Korea from March 13 to March 22. The tournament was divided into two groups - Group A and Group B.

Vietnam was the only country from Southeast Asian who joined the competition and was drawn in Group A along with Iran, China and host Korea.

Unfortunately, our very own Vietnam was defeated by 2015 champion Korea in their first game held last March 13. The scores were 48-11 in favor of the host.

Vietnam's second game was against 2015 third placer China. Same fate had happened and Vietnam tasted their second defeat against the Chinese. China outscored Vietnam, 40-10.

Their last game in group preliminary was against team Iran. Vietnam ended their group preliminary round with a win, 33-31.  

Though they were eliminated for medal contention, they were to play for the 8th to 5th places. They battled the team from Hong Kong and won the match, 30-24. The win moved Vietnam to compete for the 5th place against Uzbekistan for their last match.

Vietnam's last match was overpowered by Uzbekistan's players. They lost the match 29-41 in favor of the Uzbeks. Vietnam settled for 6th place in the final standings of the 8-team tournament.

7th South East Asian Pencak Silat Championship 2017

The 7th South East Asian Pencak Silat Championship 2017 took place in from March 14 to 18. Athletes from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand competed in this regional championships.

In the artistic category, Muhammad Afifi Nordin of Malaysia won gold medal in the men's singles with 468 points. He was followed by Singapore's Muhammad Iqbal Bin Abdul Rahman for silver medal and Brunei's Muhd Imanuddin Bin Ahmad who settled for bronze medal. 

In the women's singles event, the gold medal went to Nurzuhaira Binti Mohd Yazid of Singapore. The silver and bronze were given to Thailand's Salini Mamu and Brunei's Norleyarmah Binti Haji Raya respectively. 

In men's double artistic event, the Malaysian duo of Mohd Taqiyuddin Hamid and Rosli in Mohd Sharif took the gold medal. The silver medal went to Vu Quoc Viet and Nguuyen Xuan Thanh of Vietnam while bronze medal was awarded to Singapore's Muhammad Haziq Bin Zainal Abidin and his partner Nujaid Hasif Bin Zainal Abidin. 

For women's double artistic event, another Malaysian tandem captured the top prize. It was the tandem of Nor Hamizah Abu Hassan and Nur Syazreen A. Malik who got the highest mark points. They were followed by Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Thu Ha and Nguyen Thu Huyen who got the silver medal. The bronze medal went to Nur Azlyana bt Ismail and Nurhanishah bt Syahrudin of Singapore.

At the end of the tournament, Malaysia won the over-all championship with 9 gold medals, 3 silvers ans 4 bronze medals. Vietnam came second with 5 golds, 5 silvers and 7 bronze medals.

Singapore also made an impressive output at the tournament with 4 golds, 6 silvers, and 4 bronzes. They placed third over-all. The four gold medals of Singapore came from Shakir Juanda, Sheikh Farhan, Nurul Suhaila, and Nurzuhairah Yazid.

7th HDBank Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2017

The 7th HDBank Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2017 was held in Ho Chi Minh City from March 12 to March 17. The tournament was divided into two categories, the Masters and Challenge categories.

103 chess wizards participated in the six-day tournament in the Masters categoryand our Southeast Asian wood pushers were among of them. Chess players from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and host Vietnam competed against chess enthusiasts from 19 other countries.

Leading Southeast Asia was Quang Liem Le from Vietnam who garnered a total score of 7 points and the champion of this tournament. The last round win of Quang Liem Le against Ukraine's Stanislav Bogdanovich took him to the top of the ranking. 

Vietnam made a strong campaign as four of its chess players made it to the top 10. While Philippines highest rank was courtesy of John Paul Gomez who earned 5.5 total points and placed 20th.

Sudirman Cup 2017 - Draw Results

Sudirman Cup 2017 draw happened today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Our Southeast Asian countries who will be part of this world mixed team championship are powerhouses Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand in Group I. Also, participating in the event are Singapore and Vietnam who were placed in Group 2.

Indonesia who played against Denmark at the Thomas Cup finals last year have been drawn together along with India in Group I-D. On other hand, Thailand was drawn with China and Hong Kong in Group I-A. While Malaysia will be up against Japan and England in Group I-C.

Sudirman Cup 2017 will be held for the first time outside Asia and Europe. The host venue will be Gold Coast, Australia from May 21 to May 28, 2017.

🏒 2017 IIHF Women's Challenge Cup of Asia

Four Southeast Asian countries participated at the 2017 IIHF Women's Challenge Cup of Asia. These were Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and host Thailand. 

The tournament took place at the The Rink Ice Arena of the Central Plaza Grand Rama IX in Bangkok, Thailand from March 7 to March 15. And the tournament was in round robin format. 

At the end of the tournament, Thailand and Singapore finished the tournament with top honors as the teams managed to capture silver and bronze medal respectively.  While Philippines and Malaysia placed 5th and 7th respectively.

🏑 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League - Round 2

Malaysia as seeded (by ranking) for the second round of the 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League - Round 2 was very successful in their campaign.  They defeated China in the finals and got slots for the semi-finals of the league.

Round 2 of the league has 24 teams divided into three events to play andcompete for the nine berths going to the semi-finals. Dhaka, Belfast and Tacarigua were selected to hold the Round 2 events and Malaysia was assigned to play in Dhaka.

🏸 YONEX All England Open 2017

The talents of our Southeast Asian athletes were felt at the 2017 YONEX All England Open. The tournament was held at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, England from March 7 to March 12. 

Leading Southeast Asian region is Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. He emerged as champion of the men's singles event after beating China's Yuqi Shi in the finals, 2-0 sets. The scores were 21-12 and 21-10. 

Another Malaysian players who made thru the final event were Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh in the mixed doubles event. But the faith of the tandem were not as lucky as Lee Chong Wei as the duo were overpowered by the Chinese tandem of Kai Lu and Yaqiong Huang. The Malaysian tandem placed runner up.

Aside from Malaysia, Thailand player was also seen in the final day of the competition. Ratchanok Intanon competed in the women's singles against Tzu Ying Tai of Taipei. She lost the championship title in straight sets 16-21 and 20-22. Intanon settled for second place behind Taipei's Tai. 

Lastly, making the Southeast Asian region more powerful in badminton is Indonesia. Marcus Fernaldi Gideon partnered with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo dominated the men's doubles event. They overpowered the team of Junhui Li and Yuchen Liu of China in straight sets 21-19 and 21-14. 

Singapore also participated in this tourney.

Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships 2017

The Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships 2017 was held from February 24 to March 5 in Korat, Thailand. Our Southeast Asian fencers from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and host Thailand participated in this Asian tournament. And some of them were very successful in their campaign.

Singapore made some surprises and podium places as they haul one gold and six bronze medals in Korat tournament. 

Making name for Singapore is Esther Shi Ning Lai who captured the gold medal in the women's epee of the junior division. She bested fifty-four other fencers from Asia and Australia. Not only that, she also won bronze medal in the same event in the cadet category. Also adding to her triumph in Korat, she is one of the team members who won bronze medal in epee team event for the cadet category. She is the only Southeast Asian athlete to win three medals in this tournament.

Aside from the cadet women's epee team event, Singapore's women fencers won bronze medal in cadet's sabre team event. And completing the other bronze medalists who gave honour for Singapore were

Darren Jun Hao Tan in cadet boy's foil event, Maxine Jie Xin Wong in cadet women's foil event and Ywen Lau cadet women's sabre event. 

Aside from Singapore, Vietnam also made its presence in the tournament by snatching bronze medal in junior women's epee event courtesy of Thi Luyen Nguyen.
