Only two final events were reached by our Southeast Asian badminton players at the CELCOM AXIATA Malaysia Open 2017.The six-day tournament which was held from April 4 to April 9 in Sarawak, Malaysia was participated by players from countries like Denmark, India, China, England, Hong Kong, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Australia, Egypt, Japan, Germany and Russia.Southeast Asian countries who took part in this badminton tourney were Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and host Malaysia.And as mentioned above, two final events were reached by our SEA players. 2016 Rio Olympian Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia met another Olympian Lin Dan of China in the men's singles event. The two met already in the semifinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics where Lee Chong Wei took home the success into the finals.
But this time around, Lin Dan was able to revenge against his Malaysian rival. Lin Dan easily defeated Lee Chong Wei in two straight matches, 21-19 and 21-14. Lee Chong Wei settled runner up. The revenge was sweet but this two badminton legends are friends.
In other event, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamulio of Indonesia also made it to the finals and won the men's doubles against China's Haifeng Fu and Siwei Zheng. It was uneasy win for the white and red flag team as the Chinese got the second game 21-14. While first and last sets went to Gideon and Sukamulio to win the men's doubles event, 21-14 and 21-12.
